Fully agree. Went to Melaka on Singapore holiday. While waiting for the cruise ride, the first group in front of us was also from Sgp.The best part is later the third group joined the queue was also from Singapore. And these two groups were former colleague and bumped into each other in Melaka. laugh.gif

Just avoid melaka during long weekends... cos most singaporeans get tired after driving 200km...

Made the trip last week. Singapore - Penang - Krabi - Phuket - Penang - Singapore again with my wife and son. Could not go to Ko Samui as planned because of rough weather. It did rain heavily in Malaysia with visibility down to few meters. Singapore - Penang took 9 hours. Penang - Krabi was around 7 hours. Phuket - Penang on return leg was very tiresome and it took 12 hours, with Thai border taking almost an hour to cross. And there was construction in A4. Not very pleasant with family around, especially when they are particular about timings of food, and type of food. We reached Penang Holiday Inn by 10:00 and was told that the Indian dinner has closed at 10:00. It was a bummer and after starving for 8 hours, they had to eat a pizza. Not very nice.

Penang - Singapore was also tiresome on Sunday, with an accident in NSW involving six cars causing a traffic hold ups for 12 kms or so. It took 9 hours again, and that is expected with family, who want to stop frequently, buy things etc.... But the drive was not that bad. The immigration checks at Tuas was also piece of cake.

Overall another fun trip, except for the rains, which I liked but my family did'nt.

Waiting for the next trip ---

Glad you're back safely with yr family
Told you so, about the NE monsoon on KS side
Next time bypass Peanang 'cos time taken to Hatyai is almost the same, with the jams on the bridge side and getting into Penang town
Comin back U have to leave Hatyai in the morning, it took me just 5 mins
Year end is not very pleasant on the south of Thai, its the north that is dry and cool for a pleasant drive
And try driving to and fro on a weekday, no irrtating police rdblks and jams
Hope this help in your next trip.Cheers

I would. I bypassed Penang last time and reached Hat Yai. But this time started at 3:30 from Singapore in the afternoon and hand to stop at Penang. And you are right that getting into Penang town could be avoided for sure.

Rains were really killing for some time, with very low visibility.

I am planning next trip to Northern Thailand in Feb 2013. May be first day drive to Hat Yai, next day to Hua Hin, and third day aim at hitting Chiang Mai. Three days in chiang Mai, then drive along the border to Vientienne. Let me work out a detailed trip plan and seek opinion on fellow road warriors.

Cheers mate. Take care.
