I was considering between C4 grand picasso, S-max and Zafira last year. 1st to go was S-max...cos of the price (they have a very mark-up at that time. Don't know about now). Otherwise the s-max is the best all-rounder among the 3. I was willing to pay any extra $20K-$30k for it...but they refuse to negotiate then. (But their lower their margin a few months later...even lower than what I was looking at.)

It was a fairly close fight between C4 and Zaf...in the end i picked the latter. Reasons? Cos:-
a) I have owned an Opel before and like it's reliability and have built a good rapport with the AD's staffs,
b) the delivery of power is better,
c) it is essentially a manual gearbox and it is quite problem-free,
d) cheaper' manage to get a lot more discount,
e) slight better built quality and material looks/feels like it will withstand wear and tear better.

But it's drawbacks, compared to C4, are:-
a) dated,
b) interior space is cramped
c) interior configuration is not as clever,

I have also owned a couple french cars before.Tho I am ok with their reliability with some faults, etc......I find Opel to be almost problem-free.

C4 is attractive....but it was let down by the engine and gearbox (the old model; think it have been replaced with newer ones) and the ride is very un 'french'...a bit floaty and 'nervous' around bends. Interior ambiance and all-round visibility is top-notch. thumbsup.gif

i also like zafira.
looking at zafira brochure, so many variant of zafira, but AD only bring 1 version to s'pore.
some more, where i can find dimension spec for zafira? it not state in the brochure.

i like traditional dashboard look at zafira, compare to C4 that like future car.

but since choosing mpv type for space reason, maybe i will choose C4.
just wait which one can get more discount biggrin.gif

the trouble with C4 is reliability. heard some owners from forum complained.

Zaf Power delivery is good but automated manual gearbox not as fast, flexible and versatile compared to Fiat or Alfa's selespeed.

You gotta really get use to the Zafira's easytronic automated manual gearbox.... i have a colleague who owned 2 zafiras before (and love it very much), then bought a Mazda 5,... now went back to Zafira ... but he said after driving it for 2 months, still trying to get use to the gearbox.

For me, i really loathe the gearbox. That alone would drive me to look elsewhere. How about the VW Touran, S-Max (now priced lower. ... but engine is a gulper), Renault Scenic, Peugeot 3007, Honda Freed, Mazda 5, Nissan Presage,... and of course the Toyota Wish, haha. .... so many choices.

Do bear in mind that Zafira doesn't come with Electronic Parking Brake.....means u got to pull brakes hard if parking on slope..but their hand brake in the form of aviation brake..cool!!! That is why some Opel folks ask why my car got squeaky noise when alighting or boarding the car. Handbrake not secure enuf.

But if u r expecting a smooth auto gearbox like Nissan, Toyota or Honda, forget Zafira....the MTA is not meant for that driving. But a bit of hint, to have smooth transition from 1st to 2nd, release pedal and resume pedal at abt 2200 rpm. For 2nd to 3rd release and resume pedal at abt 2300 rpm....for 3rd to 4th and to 5th no need anything special.

On the SPORTS mode and the Zafira turns into a different monster. It is very addictive but detrimental to your FC.

New Zafira comes with built in GPS, reverse camera, DVD player....maybe bluetooth not sure about that....and rain sensor (if u check out the latest specs price list). Just go down for a test drive and check it out yourself...

cheers,

I'm onto my second Zafira now. Apart from the gear box which needs getting used to, I can't really find any other model that comes that close in terms of specs, price, etc. The closest were already mentioned here - C4 and S-Max.

If you're a speed nut, you'll be glad to know that you can touch or exceed 200km/h on NS (not that I recommend doing that speed). It was shiok! Press Sports and it really unleashes the monster within. But of course, FC suffers if you do that. pirate.gif

I am also hunting for a vehicle with higher seating overall than a normal saloon as I have been advised by my orthopaedic specialist due to a chronic injury to my left ankle and knee.

Though I've tried the C4 PICASSO (5-seater) 1.6L turbo, I find the engine rather rough and only 4-speed auto. Having owned car for almost 30 years and with currently 2 turbo-charged cars at home, a young sales lady attended to me and suggested that I test drive the car.

The moment I turned on the ignition and stepped on the accelerator while at 'P', the engine doesn't sound right though it is a turbo engine. When I started driving off, I told the lady that the engine is rather course and she told me that because it's a turbo engine.

I then told her that I have 2 turbo-charged cars and I know how turbo-charged engine sounds like, she then told me that maybe the test car engine is still not seasoned.

The design of the C4 PICASSO is nice but what I don't like is the auto with manual gears which is only 4-speed (rather dated); pick-up torque is lacking until the turbo kicks in at around 3.5K rpm.

I simply do not know why even the newly face-lifted C5 comes in 4-auto w/ 4-manual speed. But was told by the agent that the C4 PICASSO and C5 would be available in 6-speed auto w/ 6-speed in due time but don't know when.

Being one who favour high torque @ low rev, I have to give the C4 a miss though design and interior amenities are aplenty.

the C4 Grand Picasso was a 2.0L 140bhp 4A/T...then it was replaced by the current 1.6Turbo 140bhp 4A/t...the model coming end of year would be a 1.6Turbo 156bhp 6A/T...0-100kph of 11.9s is really sluggish for me...

wait for that model to come then test lor...but seriously, 1.6Turbo for such a huge and heavy car is not enough la...the engine needs to be revved then you'll feel the torque and power...

unless if you're talking about VW Twin-charged, supercharged for low revs, turbocharged for higher revs...1.4TSI Touran produces 170bhp, mated to 7DSG gearbox...

the build quality of VW is top-notch, no doubt about that, but design is really boring though...you'll probably like the power though...0-100kph just takes 8.5s!!

Hi all....

Its a long thread.. but just wanna share that I finally made my decision on my MPV... though not sure what TS finally decided.. .

But after much deliberation and tested so many MPVs ( C4/Touran/Exora/308SW/Wish/Stream/Zafira/Sorento/Estima/S-Max/Exiga/Espace )...
test drove, check specs, pricing, features.....

After 18 months of evaluations...

...punching calculators, consulting with google ( information search ), hussling of SE...

I finally comes to a conclusion that there's simply no perfect MPV to say the least but then there's an MPV with the least items of compromise from my long list the perfect MPV should be...

Of course the perfect MPV that I have in mind will be.... Boot space of Estima after 3rd seat is up.. seat flexibility and electronics features of C4, Engine and gearbox of touran, suspension and handling of S-max, Built quality of Zafira , FC of Wish, the beauty of 308SW, reliability of Stream, warranty of Sorento and best of all at the price of Exora!... confused.gif

So I stop dreaming.. and decided on the Citroen C4 Grand Picaso!!! scholar.gif

Next week collect you know... bounce2.gif

Opel Zafira is a German marque, made in Germany.
Citroen Picasso Grand is a French marque, made in Spain.

I'd chose a made in Germany product any time.

I have tested both and think that the Zafira is overall more solid.

The only thing I don't quite like is the MTA transmission.
I have had to pre-empt / expect each gear up change, release the accelerator pedal slightly and then depress it again, if I want to smoothen the in-between-gear jerks upon acceleration from start.

Otherwise, the Zafira's doors close better and its hydraulic power steering handles with much more aplomb than the Citroen's very light electric power steering.

However, in terms of clever fittings inside, I'd think the Citroen has an upper edge here, though the plastics used are still el cheapo. Moreover, I don't like the moonroof that comes standard.

I agree on what you mention about Zafira... what more.. I have been driving and owned( combined myself, parents and brothers ) the many different models of Opel for the last 12 years! I've personally driven and owned the Astra F, 2x Astra G. Parents and brothers are driving the Vectra B, Astra H, Corsa D, Zafira and Meriva.

Known Opel inside out and also the kind of service centre that we have. Its a truly solid car to be had.. almost maintenance free despite being thrown all over place.

I would have easily opted for Zafira.. but after 12 years of driving the wonderful dynamics of Opel.. I would like to try something slightly different taste.
