Lamborghini Huracán Performante Spyder is fresh off a 77-pound diet

Not only is it lighter than the standard Huracán Spyder, it's also a fair bit more powerful.

Lamborghini has a hard time turning down an opportunity to bring a bit more sun into its cars. When it unveiled the hardcore Huracán Performante Spyder, it seemed like only a matter of time until its convertible sibling would appear, and now it has.

Lamborghini has chosen the 2018 Geneva Motor Show as the spot to drop its new Huracán Performante Spyder. It sports the same engine as its roof-having sibling -- a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 putting out 640 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. A majority of that torque is available as low as 1,000 rpm, which is pretty nutty.

Then again, the performance figures are pretty nutty, too. The Performante Spyder will hustle its way to 62 mph in just 3.1 seconds, and it'll achieve double that speed in 9.3 seconds. Give it enough space, and it'll howl its way up to 202 mph. It bears repeating that that this is a convertible.

It carries over many of the handling benefits of the Performante coupe, too. The honkin' wing out back is fixed, but it works with Lamborghini's ALA active aerodynamics system. Ducts in front of the wing feed it air to reduce drag, but they can also close when a driver needs all the downforce they can get. There's some similar aero trickery going on up front, too.

Hefty reliance on carbon fiber -- it's in the spoilers, rear bumper, engine cover, diffuser and a carbon composite is all over the interior -- means the Performante Spyder isn't just more powerful, it's also lighter. It weighs approximately 77 pounds less than a standard Huracán Spyder, and that's after all the new stuff is bolted on. That's not as big as the 90-pound diet the coupe went on, but it's still darn good.

Speaking of that roof, it'll open and close in about 17 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. The rear window can be raised and lowered independently. When the top is dropped, there's a tonneau of sorts that appears and helps continue the roofline to the rear of the car, and that cover has a duct that helps reduce turbulence.

Fun fact: There's a bit of a gentleman's agreement between the automakers regarding that speed limit for dropping the top. Instead of attempting to one-up each other over and over until you can operate a convertible top at 175 mph, automakers sort of agreed with each other to cap it around 30 mph.

Convertibles are always more expensive than coupes, and the Huracán Performante Spyder is definitely no exception. While the coupe will set you back $274,390, you'll have to shell out $308,859 if you want to party with your top off. Better scrounge up the dough quickly, because this party kicks off this summer.

Lamborghini Huracan Performante Burns To A Crisp At A Gas Station In The US

Two Lamborghini Huracan owners had a pretty bad weekend, as one exotic was pushed under a parked car on Friday night, whereas the other was completely destroyed by fire.

The Huracan Performante in question was taking part in the Goldrush Rally. As the owner driving it home, he decided to stop for gas in St. Louis, along with his friend, who was driving a Gallardo Spyder.

Both of them were inside the gas station, when they noticed “a massive fireball out the window”, according to a social media post made by the owner of the Gallardo. At that point, they had no clue what happened and which car was burning, so they ran out to the other side of the road and contacted the emergency services.

By the time police and firefighters arrived at the scene, it was already too late for the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, which was completely destroyed.

So what happened that led to the fire?

A car enthusiast, who was filming both exotics while their owners were inside the gas station, caught a Chrysler minivan on camera, which drove off with the fuel hose still attached to it. The MPV seems to have sprayed gasoline on the blue Huracan, igniting the engine bay almost instantly.

The police apparently identified the driver of the MPV and “everything will be taken care of”, as per the owner of the Gallardo, who was “thankful” that everyone “got away safe and it didn’t escalate into a bigger fire”.

In an Instagram post made by GoldRushRally, organizers said: “We are happy to report that no one was hurt in yesterday’s fire.”

As for the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder that was sitting in front of the Performante during the incident, it was “just covered in ash”.

This is the new Lamborghini Huracán Evo

Got your heart set on the facelifted Audi R8, have you? Hold fire. Its Italian cousin has also visited the Angular Bodywork Ltd. Factory, and emerged approximately twenty-three per cent more angry-looking than before. Check out those spindly front aero blades and colour contrast diffuser. These tell you you’re looking at the new, 2019 Lamborghini Huracán Evo.

Lamborghini’s shifted the exhausts up the car’s backside, racecar style, to get the aero working more efficiently and has conjured lots more downforce in the process. The factory claims the Evo “improves downforce and aerodynamic efficiency more than five times over the first generation Huracán”. Five times more? From a ducktail spoiler? Blimey.

Cleaving the air more sharply has given Lamborghini all the excuse it needed to increase the Huracán Evo’s power output. The naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 now matches the Huracán Performante’s totals of 631bhp and 443lb ft. That’s enough to punt it from 0-62mph in under three seconds – 2.9sec is claimed – and on to 124mph in nine seconds dead. Will it do 200mph, as prescribed in the supercar bible? Yep, 202mph is claimed.

Bit angrier looking, bit more poke. Lambo could’ve left it there, right? Ahh, but this is modern, 21st Century, Nürburgring record-chasing Lamborghini. They’re a bit more serious these days than just painting the diffuser orange.

So, there’s a fiendishly clever on-board computer with a sexy Italian name (Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata) which lets the four-wheel steering, stability control and torque-vectoring chat to each other and sort out whatever ham-fisted inputs the human inside is making.

Apparently, it’ll predict your future, somehow. Lamborghini says “a ‘feed forward logic’ is implemented via the dynamic controller, which means the car doesn’t just react, but predicts the best driving set-up for the next moment”. Most likely that’ll be ‘shoot flames for Instagram’.

Meanwhile, gyroscopes monitor your lateral, longitudinal and vertical accelerations, as well as roll, pitch and yaw rate, to suss out how big a moment you’re about to have on Park Lane. There’s also revised magnetorheological suspension which uses an electromagnetic current to alter how rattled your teeth are.

Drive is still sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox, and at last, you can alter the various settings to your own preferences, with an ‘Ego’ setting in the Anima menu. Just like the Aventador S. Good ol’ sibling rivalry.

Inside, there’s a new touchscreen with Apple CarPlay integrated, right down on the centre console… we think. Lamborghini insists it’s built it, but didn’t think to send any pictures of the updated interior. Maybe that bit’s not finished yet. More as we have it.

A pretty thorough update for the baby Lambo, then. Question is, still want that R8? Or that McLaren 600LT? Or that Ferrari 488…
