The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has introduced a new tiered fines system for illegal parking this year.

Under the new rules, motorists who receive their second offence notice within a year will have to pay more in fines.

Do you think this is a good move?

Illegal parking is not like speeding right?

Isn't it much easier to get a scapegoat? So how will this work? Per car basis or by the person?

think it don't work much cos the Rich got a lot money to burn and lazy ones will never learn.

In that case, government gets more revenue so it does work.

Suppork! But i tink LTA will be busy wif appeals from those who cry farder cry marder from those who tink that switching on their hazard lights gives them an automatic entitlement to park anywhere for their own selfish convenience.

Want to collect more money just say so lah. No need to think of such innovation. With or without tiered fines, people will still park illegally, be it for convenience or drop off passengers or whatever.

It only serve to make people complaint more.

Easiest way to solve all the illegal parking problems is to tow the car away in conjunction with increasing these fines.

Impound the car for 1 week and make the paperwork so tedious that people will learn their lessons.

Ya. Instead of giving demerit points for parking on double zig zag lines, they should just tow the car away and make the owner pay for the towing fees and all the other fees plus fine. Better deterrent cuz the rich people cannot just pay the summon and go away. They have to go through the hassle of getting the car released. Plus can create more jobs. Lol.

Have the paper works processing office in Changi to pay fine in person, and the impounded car in Tuas for collection in person....

Illegal parking is a supply and demand problem.

If there is enough supply of parking lots, people will not want to illegally park. So if the govt wants to cut down on illegal parking, will need to increase the number of parking lots available.
Places like Thomson Plaza is terrible. Limited parking space within the building, and totally no alternate parking within 200M radius. Hard to fault people for illegally parking.

Increasing fines for repeat offenders is a way of curbing the demand by creating fear. More can be done. eg, Since most illegal parking occurs near high traffic areas like shopping malls, LTA can empower security guards of malls to issue summons with photos as proof.

i wholeheartedly disagree. People are lazy to walk and cheap to pay parking. enforcement via officers on bikes are useless, as motorist are like flies, wave your hand and they go away but as long as you do not keep waving the hand the fly will land on the food again. i agree with other posters that the best deterrent is to tow away.

Not true la. Its mainly because people are lazy to park on thought they can save on some parking charges. The coffeeshop near my block always have people parking illegally along the road although they already put double zig zag lines there. There are so many carparks around that area and more than enough lots.

Illegal parking is a supply and demand problem.

Indeed.

Short supply of civic mindedness coupled with unreasonable demands is a deadly combination.
