Ferrari SUV, due in 2021, won’t have visible rear doors

The Italian brand continues to deny the existence of Ferrari SUV, but reports say it's coming in 2021 with hidden rear doors

The long-rumoured Ferrari SUV is still on the cards, according to auto analyst Max Warburton, who claims the future model is being called an FUV (Ferrari Utility Vehicle) and does not have visible rear doors.

Last month, Ferrari’s commercial boss Enrico Galliera told Autocar: “We are not producing an SUV, because an SUV is not a sports car – it can be fast, but it’s not a sports car. We are not producing a four-door because, while a four-door can be fast, it’s not a sports car.”

He added: “Ferrari has to remain consistent, doing what we know to do, which is delivering cars that are able to deliver emotion. Sports cars.”

However, Warburton claims it is a “question of semantics”, stating that while Ferrari management continues to tell investors that it will not build an SUV or a model with four doors, the rear doors will not be visible and will instead “use a clever hidden arrangement”.

The model, expected to launch in 2021 and cost about £250,000, would rival cars such as the Lamborghini UrusRolls-Royce Cullinanand Aston Martin DBX.

Warburton estimates that 2000 to 3000 units would be sold per year.

While Ferrari continues to be evasive on the topic, a more practical model has huge potential for the Italian brand, given the trend for high-riding vehicles and the popularity of ultra-luxury SUVs worldwide, and particularly in the growing Chinese market.

Competitors LamborghiniRolls-Royce and Aston Martin are already far into development of their respective SUVs, while Bentley’s Bentayga accounts for a significant portion of its sales.

When Porsche first started with the Cayenne, many also didnt believe.

more than a decade on, its proven a winner.

And Porsche has done it again with the Macan.

Ferrari is way late, but the pie is big enough to share, i believe.

It was on the news for some times.  That's why Ferrari launched FF/GTC Lusso to test market lor

Anyway, Ferrari is silently increasing its volume in specific market (i.e. China).

It would be over my dead body in building SUV if CEO is still Montezemolo.

IMO it's already here in the form of Maserati Levante and Alfa Romeo Stelvio. By 2021 they will say scrap the suv plan. Why wait until 2021 to build one? I too don't think Ferrari will ever build an SUV, a utility vehicle, they build supercars. Maybe at most they will make is a special edition V8 Levante in 2021

Name announced: Purosangue

It'll ride on Ferrari's new front-engined vehicle architecture that will allow for all-wheel drive and electrification.

Ferrari will call its upcoming crossover the Purosangue (Italian for thoroughbred), and it'll arrive by the end of 2022, according to info from the Italian brand's future product roadmap. Be careful calling it an SUV around new company CEO Louis Carey Camilleri, though. "That word, I do not want to hear it in the same phrase as Ferrari," he said during the presentation.

Camilleri offered a few details about the Purosangue, too. Buyers will be able to choose between a purely internal combustion engine or a hybrid. It'll be the brand's first-ever vehicle with a five-door body but will feature a coupe-inspired shape. In terms of size, the machine won't be as big as the competing Lamborghini Urus.

The Purosangue will ride on Ferrari's new Front Mid Engine Architecture (above). The setup will feature a front-mounted engine that will be behind the wheels, and a dual-clutch gearbox will be at the rear. This setup will provide a better weight distribution. The platform will support all-wheel drive, and hybrids will exert their electric boost to the back wheels.

Launching a moderately high riding, five-door crossover will be a major turning point for the 71-year-old brand. According to Camilleri, former chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne pushed for the Purosangue because he saw the machine as a way to respond to changing customer tastes, particularly in China. He also believed it could boost profits and sales for Ferrari, including taking Prancing Horse's annual volume above 10,000 cars a year for the first time.

During the presentation, Camilleri admitted that he was initially skeptical about Ferrari entering the crossover market. However, the design sketches convinced him that the idea could work. Now, he's a supporter of the project.
