Hello everyone!! I'm 24 this year and am looking at getting my first continental car! (Yes!!! FINALLY after 6 years of Jap cars....) Just want to find out... which brand do you think suits someone my age most? I'm male and looking for a car between 150 - 250k. I'm torn between a Merc, a BMW and an Audi..... Any recommendations? Generally, what do you guys think of people who drive these brands?

Haha, nice try, buddy, nice try. biggrin.gif

2004 Mazda 3

ERP Gantries : S$3 per day x 5 days x 4 weeks x 12 months = S$720.00 per year

Car Road Tax : S$744 per year

Car Insurance : S$3400 per year(P-plate)

Instalments : S$10000 per year(cos incl insurance for 1st year,suffer for 2nd year)

HDB Car Park charges : S$90 + $45 per month x 12 months = S$1620 per year

Fuel : S$300 per month x 12 months = S$3000.00

Miscellaneous Carpark charges : S$20 x 12 mths = $240 per year

Workshop / Repair / Maintenance charges : S$80 so far after 5 months but estimate $600/year

Chauffeur service(co-ownering): $600 x 12 months = $7200 per year

720 + 744 + 3 400 + 10 000 + 1 620 + 3 000 + 240 + 600 = 20 324/year

cost of owning a car: $1.7k-$600=$1.1k/mth

2011 KTM duke 125 (motorcycle)

ERP Gantries : rarely used estimate S$50.00 per year

Road Tax : S$64 per year

Insurance : S$450 per year(15% NCD)

Installments : S$3000 per year

HDB Car Park charges : S$17 = S$204 per year

Fuel : S$7/week x 52 weeks = S$364

Miscellaneous Carpark charges : $20 per year

Workshop / Repair / Maintenance charges : $400/year

50 + 64 + 450 + 3 000 + 204 + 364 + 20 + 400 = 4 552/year

cost of owning a good 2b bike: $380/mth

Disclaimer: owning private vehicles can be done when shared between a couple by setting aside year end bonus for insurance and road tax renewal, setting aside PB and mid-yr bonus for wear and tear expenses and to pay off bike's installment for a year. Based on a bring home combined-income of $4k. before owning a car, we were going holidays as much as 6 times a year. but this year, we only went once cos of car's commitment. with a car and a bike, it's easier to avoid public transport at all cost for both of us!

there's no minimum amount of income to whether you can own a car or not. for us, we sacrificed our saturday just to earn $1280 per mth which goes to owning both vehicles.
