Modest HU Upgrade

Recommended Posts

(edited)

I generally enjoy upgrading one part at a time, be it performance (intake, exhaust etc) or ICE.

Lasted one year on stock Alpine W560 2DIN with phd 4075 and FB Pro Kit. Finally changed to Alpine 9855 recently at AE.

Although still passive, the speakers seem to have gained a new lease of life - not only can hear, but feel the difference with significantly more mid bass and clarity. Even when listening at high volume, it never felt "noisy" as per the old HU.

Also, Alpine 9855 allows selection of lighting, so it match with the rest of the red lights on a Teg dashboard [:)]

I was thinking of getting the new Alpine iPod fullspeed compatible HU's, but seems they do not have the full functions as per 9855 (any Alpine HU expert can elaborate)? Could it be Alpine is trying to promote their new HU with their 701 processor? Hmmm... could be, I guess.

Did some checks, seem 9855 does seem to offer more features in terms of TA, parametric EQ etc, whereas the new series 9857 probably needs the 701 processor.

Glad that you like your new sound [:)] Saw you that day, but when I want to go over to talk to you, you gone liao, like putting smoke screen [mad]

I share the same sentiments, i also find the new range of Alpine hu are not so well equipped in functions as compare to 9855. 9855 still remains a good buy for it's value of money [thumbsup]

good choice of HU! [thumbsup] but alpine HU can be a bitch to use sometimes and their menu navigation is like playing where's wally.

is 9857 out already? btw, the pioneer HU P80 is gorgeous. matt steel front with white on black screen. very classy! [inlove]

The sliding menu? Got used to it. Trick is to maintain constant contact and move your finger tip. It's a bit like iPod - initially difficult, but once you get it, it' simple.

The 9857 lacks TA and para EQ, amongst other things. It's designed with 701, so it's quite a heavier investment than the 9855.

Saw the P80. Looks good, but initial reports from the 2 cars setup with it doesn't seem too promising. I was holding out for the P80, but decided for the 9855.

eh, care to share the initial report on the P80? my ride (if you remember who I am in the Teg forum [sly] ) will be coming early next week. was originally planning to visit AE next week to upgrade the stock setup -> P80 with maybe PHD or rainbow components. bringing my own amps

One guy who bought the P80 gave up and sold it off a few days later at a loss, and bought the 9855 instead.

They tuned the P80, but simply could not get the sound just right. The owner was much happier with the supposedly lower spec 9855's sound.

Another guy bought the P80 and tuned himself. Feedback from him was also "nothing to shout about" in terms of SQ.

Personally, I'm happy with the 9855. Although "only" 5 para EQ, we can choose the 5 freq bands to tuned, and also the width of the bands. Right after fixing and tuning, I could discern much improvements in mid bass and clarity.

Goto AE and look for Foon. He's familiar with integraSG, especially LousV and my ride. Can arrange to listen to our setups so you can probably be easier to make up your mind. The rest of my components are phd.

Also, when swapping from 2DIN to 1DIN, goto KM Ubi and look for Part No: 77280-S6M-A01ZA. That's the black single DIN cover compartment. Costs $70+ after KM member discount.

Neutral Newbie

Hi Bro,

I have installed the P80 on my Sunny N16 22nd Apr. Fairly new still. As a newbie, intially I was having a tough time trying to fine tune it myself but fortunately, I have Kermit and Sarong1 to help me out during the Wed ICE meetups. Today, even though my speakers have not opened up yet, I am very satisfied with the SQ. I will be there tomorrow night during the ICE meetup at Nasi Padang stall. Perhaps bring along your favourite CD to sample it on my humble system. Anyway, I am a newbie in ICE as most bros know.

Integra. Price is very well below $800 with installation and tuning. Tuning is done with microphone, spectrum analyser and lots of subjective listening by him and I.
