Hi Kemie,

You need to check if the cable to router is loose/ damaged or you probably need to configure internet account through your router. Two main problems when I get limited connection. Another possibility is you tap to the wrong network, though chances are slim.

You can try directly connecting to modem and check if you get connectivity. Troubleshoot from there.

Cheers,

Tommy

I have selected my own wireless network. The cable to router is working fine as I can surf with the desktop connected to it (through LAN cable). What kind of setting do I need to do for SMC router?

Your username and password? The last time I was with singnet, I have used PPPoe to set that at the router setup page.

Now I am using hubstation, auto configuration-DHCP is selected.

You may need to do a Mac address clone to your PC/notebook.

Cheers,

Tommy

Got pay the bill or not? it could be not your network connection...someone else unsecure network. That's why limited.

It is your DHCP server which is giving problem. You power off your wireless router and your notebook. Then on again the router after it full boot up then on you notebook.

If it still don't work try to connect to a LAN cable and check your router setting. It might get gone the setting for DHCP.

connected with limited connection. the ip address is 169

169 is Windows self assigned IP address when you set to DHCP to grab IP address but it didn't get any IP address from DHCP server.

Are you on static or dynamic IP? if you are on static, change to another IP. IF dynamic, then just leave it.

Done the mac address clone?

Try to do a DHCP release and renew at the status tab in the router page.

If it still doesn't work and connecting directly with cable to modem does, then it could be a router setting problem.

You can try to restart the modem and router after doing all the configuration just once to see if it works.

Sorry I am no IT expert, doing my best to help.

Cheers,

Tommy

Does your router have a DHCP server built into it?

If yes, is the DHCP enabled? If it is, then is your computer configured to use a static IP address or get an IP address from a DHCP server?

To check, go to Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig /all

Check under 'DHCP Enabled' whether it specifies 'Yes' or 'No'.

If 'Yes' but your router does not have a DHCP server and there isn't one on your local network, you can be connected to the wireless router but you would not be able to connect to the internet.

If 'No', then you would have to check and see what your IP subnet your local network is on and configure your wireless connection's IP address accordingly. Be sure to point your gateway to the router's own IP address in order for you to be able to access the internet.

To change your computer's static IP address, go to Control Panel > Network Connections. Right-click on your wireless connection and select 'Properties'. In the 'Properties' window, in the 'General' tab, locate the 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' item and double-click on it. In the subsequent window, you are able to specifiy whether to obtain an IP address automatically or specify a static one.
