NURTURING CREATIVITY

MM Lee was answering a question about nurturing creative talent in Singapore, posed to him by MrJean-Marie Dru, president and chief executive officer of advertising agency TBWA.

MM Lee said: 'I don't think we can make a creative person out of a non-creative talent.

'But if you have that spark, urge or flair, the government can facilitate and create conditions to allow you to flourish and bloom.'

He gave another anecdote to explain his point.

Some years ago, MM Lee asked a trainer of three sheep dogs in Australia whether all such dogs can be specially trained.

The answer, to his surprise, was no.

The trainer replied that a dog mustfulfil certain criteria before it can be trained.

One, it must be able to stare the sheep in the eye to control it.

Two, it must be able to work long hours with the shepherd.

MM Lee said: 'We can sort out in our schools what people are good at. Then we have various schemes that bring out those talents in them to help them excel.'

MM Lee also touched on a range of subjects related to 'Brand Singapore'.

He said that Singapore's branding included factors such as a trustworthy government, a safe city, rule of law, connectivity, and first-class infrastructure.

Let's see...

Trustworthy government?

to do the right thing? hmm... ERP increase, GST increase, ministers pay increase, my salary don't get increase because there's too many 'talents' around....

Safe city?

with SIngapore's #1 most wanted man, JI terrorist leader running aound? errr...

Connectivity?

Yeah. score on that... else how could someone in a detention centre make plans with his accomplices to escape... from the toilet (gives new meaning to the term toilet break)

First class infrastructure?

Frankly, I think econimics intrastructure is good. Trade and international transport is also good. But please stop harping on world class transport system. Our internal world class transport system's infrastucture comes with world class waiting time and international level squeeze

So let's get creative...what can we do? [sly]
