Read today New Paper and reported that a vehicle owner who Subaru Legacy was involved in a traffic accident in MY and completely burnt. Insurance had write off as beyong repair. The accident happen in January 2008.

What shocking the owner is that when he surf the net in March 2008, he saw a car of same make, model and colour being advertised for sale by a dealer on sgCarMark website. A bigger jolt came when he saw it has the same licence plate number of his burnt car...... [shocked][shocked][shocked]

A police report was lodged and the car had been seized from the dealer at Turf City by LTA for investigation. Further investigation reveal that the said vehicle have the same chassis and engine number.

All this suggest that the shiny car in the showroom had been taken on the identity of the previous owner wrecked car. This is known within the car industry as "ringing" ... [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

So if your car is totally wrecked and scraped off, it could be risen again as a brand new second hand car. [sly][sly][sly]

A 'ringer' is a stolen car that has had its identification numbers replaced by a set from another - usually written-off - car, which effectively changes the car's identity.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number is presented on a small plate that is riveted under the bonnet and stamped on the car's floorpan. In addition, the VIN number will sometimes appear in the door pillar or at the base of the windscreen.

If I am not wrong, it's an acceptable practice & in fact, there's a show call "Wrecks to Riches" on Discovery Real Time, that features people that source for repairable new but scrapped cars.

The people in the show, shows how these car can be fixed@a relative low cost, & then resell it@a good price.
