The Malaysian woman had rented a room in Block 110, Rivervale Walk, from an elderly Singaporean couple.

3 M'sians arrested for robbery with hurt

TWO public-spirited members of the public helped arrest three men who robbed and assaulted a woman at Puay Hee Avenue early on Tuesday morning.

Police said a 24-year-old Chinese woman was on her way to the 24-hour convenience store along Puay Hee Avenue at about 1 am, when three men approached her on the pretext of asking for directions.

At this moment, her mobile phone rang. Taking advantage of the opportunity presented, one of the trio quickly tried to snatch her handphone and handbag.

But the victim held on tightly to her belongings. In the ensuing struggle, she was assaulted and her handphone was taken away. The trio then fled in various directions. The victim chased after one of them.

The victim's friend Mr Roszali Bin Ahmad, 40, and a member of public Mr Samuel Ng Chee Yong, 30, were in the vicinity and heard the commotion. They quickly went to her aid and ran after the robber. On seeing them, the robber threw the mobile phone away and ran off.

The victim picked up her phone and returned to her home, together with her friend and the member of public.

On the way back, she spotted one of the robbers who had approached her earlier. With the help of the pair, they caught the suspect.

Police had also ring-fenced all possible escape routes while reinforcements from Special Operations Command such as the K-9 unit were also activated to mount a systematic search for the other two suspects.

The efforts paid off when Police spotted two suspects along Upper Serangoon Road. The two men fled into the cemetery on seeing the officers.

A pursuit eventually led to the arrest of the second suspect at about 1.30 am. The third suspect was arrested at about 4 am by the police conducting a search at the vicinity of Wan Tho Avenue. The fourth suspect was arrested in a unit at Sennett Estate at 8.30 am.

The three suspects, all East Malaysians aged between 21 and 36, will be charged in Court on Wednesday for robbery with hurt, said police. If convicted, they can each be jailed from five to 20 years, and caned not less than 12 strokes.
