OCBC's fraud busters foil 'lucky draw' SMS scam

They analysed fund transfer patterns to uncover con job hitting 100 accounts

AFTER the in-house anti-fraud team at OCBC Bank swung into action, a phone scam hitting its customers was nipped in the bud.

Of the $10,000 in the approximately 100 OCBC accounts they held, only $30 was lost.

It was reported earlier this week that fraudsters masquerading as representatives of Malaysian oil company Petronas have been sending text messages to Singaporeans, congratulating them for winning cash prizes in a Petronas lucky draw and asking them to call a certain number listed in the text message.

When this was done, the callers were asked for their bank account numbers.

The police did not want to comment on whether the account holders of other banks had been targeted in this way, but confirmed that they had received reports and advised members of the public against disclosing their banking details to others.

When OCBC first received calls from suspicious account holders on June 25, the bank said that it activated its Fraud Incident Response Team (Firt), a financial Swat unit partly staffed by former police officers experienced in commercial crimes.

The team then trawled the bank's database to identify 'unique fraud patterns', said Mr Jack Foo, who heads the bank's operational risk-management team, of which Firt is a part.

He told reporters yesterday that this work paid off. Fund-transfer requests for all these accounts were going into one account, a non-OCBC one.

The bank declined to say whether the account was a local or overseas one, citing an ongoing police investigation.

The bank then contacted affected account holders to verify these transactions and temporarily de-activated those accounts whose owners could not be reached.

The $30 fund transfer that went through happened before June 25.

It was a long time ago. Ebay was pretty new at the time. Got contacted by the seller of an item on ebay that I didn't win. Top bidder bailed. I could have it for the amount I bid. "Send it Western Union." I had to act fast. I mean, his dad was in the hospital and needed the money. I never saw that camera. Later I checked the phone number https://areaphonecodes.com/argentina/ and it was some guy from Argentina. It was the last time when I was deceived.

I'm gonna disagree with you. PLEASE at least hear the caller out first before hanging up or calling the police.

In my line of work, sometimes we need to call people at the handphone. So you might have calls from police, scdf or even hospital and you did not expect it. Let me explain.

A gets into an accident. In the hospital he requests the nurse to call the family urgently as they do not know he met with an accident. A further says that only the parents are at home and they can ONLY speak mandarin. So in the interest of time, when we call we start off in mandarin. If the caller hangs up immediately, we don't know if it is

a) wrong number from patient

b) we accidentally key in wrong number

c) caller accidentally hanged up

d) caller does not want to pick up phone

AND because we do not know we will keep dialing and time is wasted. Easy to say confirm with patient again but what if patient is now in coma?

Or A is unwell. Does not call for ambulance but calls the son (actually I think it's common in Asian country). Son calls ambulance and says A only speaks mandarin and gives A hand phone number. So we call back and if A-D happens (previous paragraph) it is time wasting.

But obviously if someone asks for bank account or says you won the lottery then by all means hang up. But at least hear the caller out instead of just hanging up straight away.

Nope. We don't pre record. But the scam call I got wasn't pre recorded. I replied don't bluff. The caller said "but but" then I say I also with police and she hanged up.

sadly,  there are so many SGPrean  who are rich but stupid enough to get cheated. Guys, whether you are as rich or half as rich,  be careful.

Upload the pix and let the police do their bit.

I normally do it very quickly as get really irritated when I travel overseas and getting such spam messages.

As long as I block and I still receive such message, I upload to the site .

I have done it. Have made multiple reports to the extent the IO called me and advised me to simply block the number. Don't need to waste time.
