iam using HTC Dream from feb-09

Pro

-integration with gmail, google maps, google search and google talk quite good, you are always connected, u feel information at ur finger tips

-lots of free apps and addictive games, especially

Cons

-battery will only last a day if you use a lot of 3G internet, can last for 3 days when i dont browse during holidays

-Charging is slow, and got worse after recent updates, it takes close to 2 hours to fully charge the phone

this is my first touchscreen smart phone so everything feels better than my prev SE walkman phone.

I'm bumping this up.

Got an Android Dream. Rooted it and parked Donut into it.

Works like a dream. For 400 bucks this can't be beat. iPhone's serious contender.

The killer app? Locale.

I now can switch "profiles" with Android's "GPS".

Easy loh.

Export the gmail contacts as csv.

Import into your Nokia phone as csv using Nokia PC Suite.

No need to put it into the SIM card. I'm sure there are no camera versions of the phones that use S40 or S60.

Just bought the Hero a couple weeks back, love the phone. Only bugbear is the lack of mapking in Android format, currently using Sygic, nice in its own way but not user-friendly in terms of POIs.

So any of you doing those voodoo things.

The first thing I did was do all the voodoo. [lipsrsealed]

The Dream is quite a b1tch to perform voodoo on. When finally done, using 2.0 Donut is really nice.

Also another thing, the Android Market has so many apps, you are spoiled for choice.

Some sort of Darwinism is taking place as the apps are developed and evolving very fast. Also quite chaotic. Now with Donut, some apps don't work anymore! Big scramble by the developers to make their apps compatible.

This will never happen with iPhone since Apple has this stranglehold on what can and cannot be done.

Ahhhhh what voodoo thingy huh? Please enlighten [sweatdrop]

I love the apps market but am also concerned with the rapid evolution of the platform...Some form of regulation is actually good as I don't want to keep updating the apps or to find out one fine day they stopped working <_<

hi mate

Using HTC Hero, my humble opinions:

Pros:

1) GUI and interactivity better than my 3 previous WinMo phones.

2) Great integration with anything Google, including my address book and calendars.

3) Great tools like books, personalization, social media, entertainment, etc, all found on Android Market.

4) Easy to sync with the Mac (my previous WinMo phones were difficult to sync, whether Missing Sync or Pocket Mac). It is probably the closest to the iPhone in sync capability with the Mac, even ahead of Symbian OS, imho.

Cons:

1) The virtual keyboard not as good as my iPod Touch or my previous WinMo physical keyboard.

2) Battery not fantastic, but usable (can last a day with some conversations, 15 minute interval email retrieval, no WiFi and no Bluetooth on).

Hope these helps. I must say that I do like most of it, just the 2 things above. So if one is a serious keyboard user and have really large fingers (I don't), and have Wifi, Bluetooth, 3G retrieval, serious conversations, then the above issues will be a challenge.

regards

That's why I got the Dream. It has a physical keyboard.

BTW, the onscreen keyboard works differently. We try to type the letter we want but instead it works better if you approximate the key needed and if it is the wrong one, shift your digit over to the correct one then let go.

You don't need an accurate pinpoint press.

For battery life, I find Locale superbly useful especially with the Airplane mode addon. I specify sleeping hours to allow the phone to go Airplane. At the same time, allow only certain numbers to reach me like Wife, Mom and POTUS. [laugh]

Actually, you cannot jailbreak an Android phone. In a sense, it is not termed as jailbreaking because the phone is on a "open handset" concept. It means you can do whatever you want with it.

It is unlike iPhone where Apple controls what apps can be developed and what cannot. What handsets can get the newer versions of the OS etc.

Now I have upgraded running on Eclair.

I find the barcode scanner very useful. Something the iPhone does not have functionally.

In some ways there are pros and cons to the "business models".

Apple with its strict control policy ensures some kind of uniformity to the apps being developed. So in a sense, all the apps can run on the increasingly better OS. It is controlled and incremental. Also allows Apple to say no to certain technologies that might take screw their business like Google Voice.

Android on the other hand is different. The apps market quite luan now because what works for 1.5 might not work for 1.6 and now 2.0. The developers have to keep up to make their apps compatible. It can drive users and developers nuts.
