Credit cards - benefits

LOL! Which Amex card did you sign up for?  Over the years, this is how they have progressed.  They used to waive my annual fee, then give me 50% discount on annual fee + give me points which I promptly converted to miles then one fine day decided to bill me 100%.  I told them I was returning the card.  Nasty CS bugger then told me I had to clear my balance immediately if I wanted to cancel, which I promptly did in the next 3 minutes with internet banking while I put him on hold.   [laugh]

I think he wasn't used to such a response   :D

Mind you that their benefits were also steadily heading south with each year.

There was a time when Amex had 10x points at The Hour Glass. Went there, negotiated for discount, paid with Amex. Then used the points to redeem vouchers at Courts. Shiok.

Now I am using it for the lunch at Mikuni only. Their other benefits not appealing to me already. Card is not in my wallet already.

But that was a long, long time ago.   <_<

Actually I think of late card issuers' A&P budgets probably got reduced.

Promotions for online purchases, overseas spend and dining are not exactly exciting these days. And those that have decent rebates for online purchases, overseas spend and dining, have to spend like $600 per month on the card.

Recently I bought a few items.

OCBC charge a conversion fee for each of the line item.

DBS does not seem to have conversion fee. Not sure if it's lumped inside the line item though.

I got my amex when I was in Courts@tampines ... got the courts membership and the speaker also and some vouchers.

only used the card once to pay for a group dinner. but the promoter told me to call him when come to renewal...

anyway, I used my DBS card to pay the deposit for my new car ... and I was shocked to see that $10k can only get $20 restaurant voucher !!

i si bey ngiow, not only deposit, even the balance payment i also used manhattan card to max out the rebate, and just nice beyond that amount paid cheque.

The AD charged i think 2% more for using credit card for the balance payment after the deposit, but the rebate for manhattan card still got a little bit advantage overall. Too bad manhattan got cap... they also not stupid...

actually i find the AMEX CS quite ok, everytime i call to waive, they able to waive... for those who travel, the krisflyer card quite good to use.

i only TL UOB: reject my application for a card long ago.. then send me a new card recently i call them and cancel!

I agree. AMEX CS are quite good. Maybe the CS had a bad day. He did offer to downgrade my card for the fee waiver but the present card was already losing so many of its benefits that I felt it wasn't worth it. So I cancelled.

like i mentioned above ... $10k only get $20 vouchers.

imagine paying another 90k on card ... only get $180 vouchers with the points ... but kenah pay $2700(3%) on the card fees !!

not worth it.

TMD... he let me choose from a choice of dunno how many cards. I chose one and my wife chose another...

Lucky we haven't used it before (the rebates also not as good as other cards we have)... next time if they charge us, can cancel immediately without anything to pay up

I have a AMEX Capitacard, coming to a year, just received statement asking for annual fee liao.

Gonna call and cancel this card, still not widely accepted I feel. Not worth to renew.

This is the FIRST TIME I received 10K miles from Citibank without paying any membership fee

(card holder since 2007).

Really unbelievable.....

=======================================

Thank you for your valued support. As a show of our appreciation, we are pleased to waive your

Citi PremierMiles card annual fee and credit you with 10,000 renewal miles.

The waiver will be reflected in your next statement.

I have been thinking about saving more $ but its not easy

Heres the problem i face

I try to use different credit cards to maximise discounts etc but realise that it's difficult to keep track of my expenses, some months i overspent, my monthly credit card bills can be $2-3k on the average [sweatdrop]

Any one got good ideas on how to monitor spending?

Another problem is that I use giro paymemt for all my cards, which makes it even more difficult to keep track of the expenses

Ask yourself what you really need.

Then buy only what you need.

I have one monitor.

I keep telling myself "don't spend, don't spend"

Wait for next month, then repeat "don't spend, don't spend"

Until you cannot tahan anymore...
