Hi all. In these times of high car prices, was thinking of getting a wira 1.3 m for my dad as his '92 sunny is going to expire next year. Any bros here driving that car? am eyeing one that is selling at Tagore. An 05 Oct model. Any reviews or things i should look out for? any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Dad just needs a car to drive around n fetch my mum n stuff. Semi retired.

can read all you want on the wira...

my bro-in-law drove a wira before (malaysia model...KL plate) heard wira export models were different from their countries models in safety stuff... anyways

IMHO...

advantages...

*JB can get spareparts dirt cheap...

*car is pretty spacious for such a small sedan, 5 adults no problem... with decent booth space...

*cheap to maintain

disadvantages...

*antique design... launched in 1993... no changes in looks...

*not like Savvy or the new Saga, the Wira is still using very old technology since 1993...

*this is an old school proton quality... expect 'rattles' and 'sounds' within 2nd year of driving.. lotsa wind noise...

Wira is basically a very easy maintenance car. I drove one for 13 years from new till changing a new ride in 2009... It clocked a mileage of 230000 km without any major overhaul or repair works like engine overhaul, driveshaft and clutch replacement... Other than regular oil change servicing in Malaysia, which is half the price of Singapore, those wear and tear parts, like water pump & timing belt (both changed during 80k km or 100k km), engine mountings only changed at year ten, air-con compressor replaced at year ten due to worn bearings, radiator changed during year 7 due to crack (bought from scrap yard for $60 compare to local dealer selling $300 new) and absorber changed during year 5 and 10 due to worn out... I can say I don't spend more than $5000 on major parts throughout the 13 years in maintaining the WIRA. The savings is because most the time it is serviced in Malaysia...

The only problem I had was the power windows, original ones wasn't that strong due to some parts using plastic, those I DIY replaced with OEM power window mechanism that comes with metal parts, after that all is fine. The complains I have with the WIRA is the hard riding, for 1.3 is seriously under powered with A/C on, slightly high fuel consumption (around 10km/l - 11km/l if plain city driving)

Good part is, easy maintenance, engine quiet on the move, during cruising, soft touch interior and huge boot space!!

Sounds good then. Coincidentally, my mech in msia was telling me not to get the hyundai accent which was my initial choice. something abt the engine prob. he recomended that i get the wira for my dad since its a basic no frills car. Quite reliable too. HEartening to know that it can last so long. Thanks for the info.

If you don't need too much space, consider a kelisa. Cheap parts, god fuel economy and slightly better build quality

Proton Wira is not a bad car.....

Its just like Yamaha RXZ for the bikes section.

Cheap, budget and good running....

It can be very fast if you knows how to....

Good budget car....

But for proton, i still prefer WAJA......

you cant get much power out of a 1.3 or 1.5 wira... unless fit a turbo... most 'fast' wiras/wajas in MY have got engine changed.... usually to Mitsubishi engines... Mivec... Evo... Galant.....

fitting a turbo has more problems then 1 can imagine... somemore such an old car problems sure come within 1st few days of driving... [laugh]

Hmm, I haven't heard alot of good things about Proton Wira. But conversely, I heard a lot of good things about the perodua kelisa. So my choice would be kelisa if you dun mind the small space. Its fuel efficient (more than the Kia Picanto) cute and funky!

My 1st car 10years ago.

Remember to put a swimming truck in the boot.

During heavy rain, the boot compartment will turn to swimming pool.

Easy maintainace for the 1.6L wira.

Oh ya....the power window thingy. Changed many times.

Not sure how fast u mean by fast but my fren 1.5 wira can ta pao my 1.6 waja without any engine transplant.. and top speed at 200kmh.. not sure whether this is fast for u or not.. atleast at 190kmh, my ball is shrink liao.. so that is fast for me..

but heard that 1.3 wira is really underpowered.. so TS u might wanna consider 1.5 wira instead.. just my 2 cent...

time taken to get to 190km/h makes alot of difference... you reach 190km/h in a family sedan is normal... you get to 190km/h in a rex, evo, or GTR or any supercar... hell of a difference...

i was in a BMW 520i at 200over km/h... felt comfortable... still can look at scenery and other cars...

i was in a Suzuki Swift GTI at 240km/h... i thought i was going to die... i held on very tight to the handle and seat...

balls shrink??? i was pillion on a blackbird normal arai open face helmet... i saw 280km/h... my balls fell off... i couldnt breath the air pressure was terrible... at next stop i never got on the bike again ever...

Based on the worldwide reviews about the wira, it doesn't seem to be a good choice.

A lot of complains, especially from the Malaysian owners.

Please refer to the following link.

PS: You can explore the above link for reviews about other cars too.
