MFA questions credibility of US human trafficking report

By Saifulbahri Ismail | Posted: 15 June 2010 1744 hrs

SINGAPORE : The Foreign Ministry has questioned the credibility of a US Department of State's human trafficking report which has downgraded Singapore's ranking.

The "Trafficking in Persons Report 2010", which was released on Monday, put Singapore on a watch list this year.

MFA is puzzled and said the US has not satisfactorily explained how it had arrived at this conclusion.

In a statement, the Ministry added the Singapore Government is committed to tackling the human trafficking issue, and its efforts in dealing with the issue have not weakened since last year.

MFA said it will respond in detail as appropriate in due course.

It stressed that the report is more a political ritual than an objective study.

The Singapore Government questioned how the US could rank itself in Tier One, when it is well known that the US has been unable to stem a flood of illegal workers, many of whom are trafficked by organised criminal gangs.

MFA said that the US has not been able to cope adequately with the problem and that is among the reasons why immigration is such a hot political issue in the US.

It suggested that the US should perhaps examine its own record more carefully before presuming to pronounce on other countries. - CNA/ms

This seems to be a very Singapore trait.

Instead of addressing the criticism, attack the record of the other party. One has no bearing on the other.

But I do think the SG govt has right to be angry

I guess the "traffiking" includes those on "working pass" & "student pass" etc. There were a couple of cases involving Singaporeans assisting some nationalities entering into the States, Singapore & other developed counties illegally with forge passports. I encountered two of these fellas. One was in my ex-company a couple of years back. His passport was detained indefinitely, he can travel overseas with a piece of paper if there is a need to after an interview & screening from the authorities.......There's actually alot of stuff goin arnd in Sinky. Singaporeans are veri entrepreneur by nature.......legally or illegally. Remember, we are the most competitive city arnd. LOL [laugh]

Just today there are reports of PRC women using sham marriages to work in SG. Is that considered human trafficking?

that is the likely reason lor.. sg as a transhipment port usually does not check the contents of containers shipping thru there.. so when usa receives a container full of illegal immigrant and they prob see sg as the last port that the container is shipped from..

regardless of Traits or not, its very valid. How could USA be the number 1 when so many illegal immigrants are in their country??
