How to rip VCDs and DVDs to portable HDD?

Can someone teach me how to rip VCDs and DVDs to a portable HDD? I've tried dragging and dropping the files on the VCD/DVD into the HDD but it doesn't work. Some of the discs are getting old and I'm afraid they may spoil with time.

u cant drag and drop. need to use ripping utility such as nero, magic disc, dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, etc. juz google for dvd ripper. i dun bother with vcd cos quality suxs. keeping dvd and hd quality movies only. normally kept in iso, img and mkv formats.
