Cough remedy for my child

My child used to have cough and cold very often when she was 1.5 to 2.5 years old, have been to many Western and Chinese doctors to help heal this sickness.

Lately, she has recovered a lot, hardly have any now, even if she has any of them, she can recover within the day.

But now she starts to cough during night when she is going to sleep, daytime is ok, no cough at all.

Sometimes the cough goes away when she is sleeping soundly, but if she is not sleeping well, she will cough until she vomit the milk.

So we gave her cough medication from KK just to help her sleep well, but we know this is not a good choice.

I think this has to do with her poor respiratory function.

Anyone can advise how to help improve this condition?

Many thanks

She might has sensitive nose.

My daughter also have this problem when she is pre-school. Often cough until vomit at night when 2-3yo. After I bing her to visit children specialist in KK and had regular follow visit, she was given nose spray (forget the actual name, in green bottle). She is now OK at 7yo.

You might want to bring her to polyclinic 1st, ask the doctor to arrange an appointment with the children specialist in KK. If your pocket is deep, you can go to private children specialist.

Coughing can be caused by many factors. A few steps that you may wish to take to narrow down the exact cause of your child's cough:

a. ask her what she feels just before she coughs and during her coughing episodes (e.g. ticklish throat or heavy congested feeling in chest area)

b. find out what has changed in her diet (food, drinks)

c. study the environments that she is exposed to during the day and night and list down any changes (air-con, temperature changes, humidity)

Western medicine usually resolves the symptoms without treating the cause. In many cases, it is the body's own immune system that resolves the ailment on its own. Chinese medicine however works on identifying the root cause and then treating it. When that happens, the symptoms disappear. I am not advocating the latter but rather encouraging you to think along that line so that you are able to identify the root cause even when the western doctors are not able to.

The human body is healthy when the various aspects are in harmony. The body falls ill when that harmony is disrupted. Restoring health to the body is basically about finding out the cause and nature of the disruption, and then removing the disruption.

Most probably environmental.

Any soft toys or dust-trapping things in the room? Air-conditioner filter washed frequently?

You might wanna buy an air purifier.

We have restricted her to only one soft toy, all others are put away.

I will check air-con filter tomorrow.

I've got the air purifier.

My child is only 2yrs 9 mths, it's very difficult to get her to answer question "a".

Diet is always different and environment is the same.

I do understand Western medicine will not treat the cause, but for Chinese medicine it's hard to find a good physician.

Is there any supplement I should give to improve her health?

Can you still remember the name of the doc your child sees?

my son is 2 years 5 months old, he also had a cough for quite some time, then at night, when sleep liao sometimes will cough till vomit milk.

went to see GP, they say let him recover by himself.

so went to see kids specialist, she diagnose that his lung is weak and gave him medication to improve his lung power for 2 months, so far so good.

if you think your sepcialist at KK is not helping, then seek a second opinion from elsewhere.

aircon cause dry throat and i seldom let my kid sleep in aircon. Even until today and older now, only get to turn on if it is really hot. With windows open, wind and fan, good enough for them.

My boss strongly recommends this specialist called T.B Chan (yes, ironically) from Mt. E.

You mentioned she only cough at night and is ok during the day time. The way I look at it, it is "cold" cough. Do you turn on a/c when she sleeps? Fan? Maybe you would like to do away all these for a week and see how is the result? Also, is she wearing enough when she sleeps? Most important her chest/ shoulder is "covered" when she sleeps as the oldies always believe it will lead to one or another.

Does your kid exercise? I'm a classic case of this... I have persistent cough for about a few years since K1... My mum tried many methods but no use... It was until primary 3 when they introduced Taekwondo to my school... My mum signed me up and after 6 months of training, I became better... Maybe just some light exercises like jogging or even playing at the playground do help... Do also minimise those soft toys (if any) in her room...

Methods differs from person to person so this might or might not work... At least it worked for me...

Just sharing my thoughts... I do hope she gets better... I'm a father of 3 kids so I do understand...

The reason for the night cough is the colder air. When the kid breathes in, the air passage gets constricted. Thats what my PD says.

Anyway, my sonny has the same problem. Bronchitis when young and now at 3 1/2 years, occasionally cough till vomit milk.

Must take him swimming more often.

Try checking the environment, maybe the bed or toys that she used to play.

check if she cough at night when laying down. some time she is not having cough, she maybe "cold" by nature and noise maybe stuck, when she lay down, the phlegm will flow from noise to throat and she will cough.

let her play under the sun more often and if possible to swim more often.
