Mini-itx2010 Neutral Newbie October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 Do you think it should be mandatory for bicycles on the road to have head lights and tail lights as well as helmets? Cause I drive along pasir panjang road regularly and notice that there are many bicycles along the road w/o any lights. Some at least have some reflectors, others have nothing as all. IF the bicycles are black and they are wearing dark colour shirt, its difficult to spot them from a distance. Worse, some are even riding against traffic! In the past, I believe bicycles are not exactly common on the road. But now, I notice that there are more and more bicycles on the road and most do not have any proper lighting of any kind. The cyclists also have no protection of any kind (not even a basic bicycle helmet). Thus if they get in accident, they are going to have serious injuries to their heads. Perhaps, its time to have some form of regulations for cyclists in order to make the road safer for them as well as us. ↡ Advertisement
Timex1441 1st Gear October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 A good start is to make it compulsory for bicycles to get registered. After that, implementing safety requirements might be easier.
inlinesix Supersonic October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 It is stipulated in Road Transport Act. But nobody enforce it. So??
Jpcc Clutched October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 (edited) If we get gahman to regulate / register, that will involve admin cost. Eventually, LTA may need to tax cyclists, which neither parties would like to arrive into such a situation. If attempt to reduce transaction cost by going online, I would think a lot of uncles are not that well educated to surf web, register. And register means licence plate? maybe bid coe in future? But it is good for cyclists to wear helmets to protect themselves. Head light, tail lights more relevant to night cycling only? Believe road cyclists may not be too happy over compulsory accessories. Hard core roadies are weight weenies pimping their rides with carbon fibre bike frames and sacrificing a number of spokes just to save a few grams. To promote/ prepare for a green economy, i do think gahment need to start and think over the road infrastructure in a grand scale. Lulalegirl Neutral Newbie October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 I think they must wear headlight and tail light.. The Blangladesh are very dark in their skin colour. And they wear black Clothes. Along some dark road, I can't see them. It's very dangerous.
Syaheerbmw 3rd Gear October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 Most of these type of cyclists are foreigners.. I'm a driver and a cyclist, too.. I know that there are regulations stating that bicycles must have a headlight and taillight at night and also to cycle following traffic flow, but none on helmets and bright clothings.. I personally think that it has to be common sense to be visible at night and to protect your head, but since nowadays, too many FTs who lack common sense or just ignorant, the govt should impose a fine for atleast those who do not keep themselves visible.. Celicar Turbocharged October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 The key gap is enforcement and as with the various cycling-related issues such as cyclists going against the flow of traffic, so long as there is no proper registration system, clamping down would be extremely difficult and piecemeal. So what if you report? Best you can provide is a description of the cyclist, not a registration plate or some form of unique identification. By the time any officer arrives at the scene, if he cares to turn up at all, the cyclist would be long gone.

Lowrider 2nd Gear October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 Human powered bicycle is ok lah. Kena electric powered bicycle lagi better. Confirm they ride as if electric bicycle = motorcycle. these electric bicycles are really confusing...built bigger than normal bicycles, too fast for bicycles, but too slow for motorcycle! Usually uncles ride these, complete with helmet, front and rear lights... sharing road with cars
Fitvip Supersonic October 20, 2010 Share October 20, 2010 There was a full set of bicycle rules previous which had been shelved by the authorities! They even did away with registration. I can say most of the bicycles on the road do not conform with the rules! Interestingly, NOBODY(you know who) cares!
