Vextan 1st Gear October 27, 2010 Share October 27, 2010 (edited) The corruption part is factored into their salary. Whoever "their" are.. would you rather the leaders draw high salary that is competitive with the private sector as what ceos are getting, or rather they draw low salary and rip the country off in hundred of billions , like philipines (under marcos and estrada ) and indonesia (suharto) , even malaysia ? look at what they are compared to us now, we are the only developed country despite no natural resources and land. be grateful . the thing is, high salary doesnt guarantee no corruption, but at least it doesnt have a compelling reason to be corrupt. but paying low salary will definately encourage corruption. to me, i think that paying a few million dollars to a good leader is justified. a ceo of a mnc that makes hundred of millions of dollars a year, their salary is in the millions also, and they are not subjected to public scutiny and their personal freedom restricted, unlike a public servant. so what is a few million for a leader who manages and built up hundred of billions of reserves for the nation, created jobs for the people ? Mike1234 1st Gear October 27, 2010 Share October 27, 2010 So we still need to increase our Ministers, MP and Civil Servants pay so we can be 100% corruption free!!!!! Thats why.... Why should we increase their pay when there's still corruption???? [hur] And also recently the corruption case...
Vextan 1st Gear October 27, 2010 Share October 27, 2010 (edited) Thats why.... Why should we increase their pay when there's still corruption???? [hur] And also recently the corruption case... there will always be crimes in every country, corruption included, in no matter however safe\corruptino free a country is. the question is, relatively how common ? in singapore, corruption in the public service is few and far, and at least the authorities do expose them, and not cover each other's wrong doings like other country, where people from the very top right down to the policemen on highways, blatantly receives kickbacks, bribes and rip off from so-called national projects (iskandar). Sosaria Turbocharged October 27, 2010 Share October 27, 2010 Comparing the pay of public officials, how come Denmark and NZ can be as corruption-free as SG?? You mean these two countries, Denmark and NZ, manage to achieve the same standard of clean govt with less?? And how come they also have equally good governance and clean public officials? These are the pertinent questions to ask.
Sdf5725 1st Gear October 27, 2010 Share October 27, 2010 how come the pay so high still same score as those that the pay not so high? so no corruption is not equal to high pay lah.

Fair pay + corruption = Obsenely high pay Therefore, Obsenely high pay - fair pay = Corruption Based on the above, the top salaries we paid to our high earning civil servants is just another form of "corruption". Only difference is, in other countries, they do it undertable. Here, we do it openly. China and Singapore are similar in a lot of ways, in terms of govt and how both countries are progressing economically with a pool of technocrats. Leaders in both countries are also enjoying all the perks in one form or another, with the key difference in how these perks comes about. Give me SG style of "open corruption" any day. Bet none of us prefer China style of undertable corruption even though China is progressing well economically. At least here, we know the boundaries of our govt's salaries and if our people has a strong desire to change it, it can be done. We are just human. Everyone has a price that can be bought. It is just that over here, the govt managed to raise the barrier to entry much higher than the rest of the world.

Being clean on the outside doesn't mean anything. The SLA saga is not the first and definitely won't be the last. And may I add on, they chose to serve the govt, we did not hire them. So their constant ranting of comparison with the private sector means nothing to me. If they are not happy with their pay, by all means go ahead to the private sector. ↡ Advertisement
