When 2 Brothers Share A Wife

BEIJING - Faced with a shortage of brides, two brothers living in the mountains in the south-western Guangxi region married the same woman. She took turns bearing them children.

The problem is expected to get worse. State researchers forecast 24 million Chinese men will be unable to find a bride by 2020.

But the effects of China's surplus of men and deficit of women can already be seen in isolated cases like the one in Guangxi, first heard of by population expert Gui Shixun of East China Normal University in Shanghai more than 10 years ago.

China's gender-at-birth ratio - defined as the number of boys born per 100 girls - rose to 117 in 2001 and 121 in 2005, before dipping to 118 in last year's population census released last week. But officials say this figure is still too high for comfort. China's population of 1.34 billion means these ratios translate into huge armies of excess males.

This is an even bigger problem in the countryside as many women head to the cities to work, leaving the men behind, noted Professor Gui. Gender imbalance is especially serious in rural provinces such as Anhui and Henan. There, at least 130 baby boys are born to every 100 girls, going by 2005 figures.

'When there is a shortage of women in the marriage market, women have the opportunity to 'marry up', inevitably leaving the least desirable men with no marriage prospects,' noted Dr Therese Hesketh of University College London, in a paper on gender imbalance she co-wrote with Chinese academics Li Lu and Zhu Weixing.

The children will be half-siblings instead of cousins???

Both man f the same women. When she is pregnant, who is the father?

It's all in the scheduling my friend.

Maybe can divert some indian women to PRC.

Coz at the end of the day, maybe 100, maybe 500, all of us are either going to be PRC or Indian, or a mixture of both.
