Yaloryalor 5th Gear May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 Hi Guys, I got the formula (from MCF) to calculate the last alphabet of the new car number plate. However, it does not work if the old plates starting with "SA~SZ" or "EA~EZ". Anyone got the formula/ excel file? Tks! ↡ Advertisement
Steptronic Supercharged May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 (edited) Hi Guys, I got the formula (from MCF) to calculate the last alphabet of the new car number plate. However, it does not work if the old plates starting with "SA~SZ" or "EA~EZ". Anyone got the formula/ excel file? Tks! Try putting a "-" in the third digit. It works in the attached file, but I am not sure if the end alphabet we are getting is correct (I have not checked with any known regn number). Yaloryalor 5th Gear May 31, 2011 Author Share May 31, 2011 Tks bro! It works for the new number plate but still not correct for old plates.

Steptronic Supercharged May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 Oh yes, you are right, I forgot the logic that the first digit ("S" in the new numbers) does not have any input in the calculations. I completely missed this point when I replied last time. Thanks for making me to remember.
KARTer 2nd Gear May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 Thanks for the formula. btw, anyone knows why LTA needs the alphapet after the digits?.... there must be a purpose else it just for fun?

The last digit is called "Checksum number" same as what we have on our IC #s. I understand that this is to reduce frauds in making new combination of numbers

So that our TP can easily catch you by not mistaking you for a car from MY. Haha
Acieed 1st Gear May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 When TP take down your number, they can verify they got it right or make it right.

Steptronic Supercharged May 31, 2011 Share May 31, 2011 When TP take down your number, they can verify they got it right or make it right. It may not be just for TP as TP has full records of the car and owner once he knows the registration number. This one would be helpful where someone tricks by changing just a digit in the 2 alphabets and four digits of a given car number for cheating or producing a wrong identity. Definitely there is some catch, which I do not know! Another advantage of this checksum I see is it is very helpful for those having vantage numbers. I used to have a 3 digit number in one of my earlier cars and most of the time I was asked what was the fourth digit. Imagine what happens if we do not have checksum at the end! You are right, that is why the algorithm used for checksum in our ICs are not made known. It is bit lenient for cars! If anyone uses the formula and find checksum for a number combination, it would be already on somebody else's name and the description of the car registered under would not match also.
