Neutral Newbie

hi all

i believe i may have damaged my TB's seals by cleaning it using strong solvents & now my idling & accelaration are rough & hits a flat spot at 2500 rpm & thereafter will increase very slowly even though am maintaining accelarator pressure.

anyway to check & repair or must change?

damage?

ok to get recond or advisable to get new part?

anybody have 1st hand experience & can point me to a reasonable workshop?

thanks

use a clean tissue to remove the solvent and wait for it to dry before the TB go back to normal

if you remove the whole TB then u must use a new gasket already

btw what kind of spray r u using?

this has been few months already so its definitely dry.

using some brand called series 500 carb cleaner. tb was not removed only remove the plastic airduct & just spray down the tb while holding the butterfly valve open. as this model is e throttle & using maf sensor i cant run engine while spraying as as engine tends to die. so i speayed alot down the tb then put back airduct leave overnight for the solvent to eat the gum then start next day. did this at approx 3 week intervals as kept thinkng not totally clean each time. however it did not get better & i just read on some popular mechanic website that some solvents are too strong that will destroy the seals.

maybe you try to drop by autosaver, they have the handheld thingy that can reset the ECU back to original status. happens to me once when i clean my mass airflow sensor, after cleaning the idling speed shot up without I pressing the accelerator. have it re-tuned and now OK leow.

i believe the seal is the gasket.

maybe you can try resetting ur ECU by plugging the power from ur battery for 5-10min

how do u clean the mass airflow sensor?

also as mine is manual when moving & changing gear during depressing clutch the idle will shoot up to 1.5 to 1.5 k rpm then slow drop to 800 rpm. this only happens when aircon is on, w/o aircon, depress clutch the idle wont shoot up.

the mass airflow sensor is a long rectangular piece located near the throttle body, take out the plug with a bunch of wires, but you need a special hollow star looking key to unscrew the cover b4 you can take it out, thereafter, you take some electronic cleaner and spray on the 2 wires of the sensor.

What was mileage of said car before you did throttle cleaning?

U mean after spraying u didn't use cloth to clean the gunk immediately?

Mileage 130k

I personally wouldn't use a throttle cleaner/spray on a high mileage engine like yours. btw what engine oil are you on? w30 or w40? any excessive oil consumption after said incident?

Anyway back to your original question.

Conservative guess = MAF sensors damaged by the harsh chemicals in throttle cleaner which results in incorrect A/F mixture

Worst case scenario = piston ring/seals damaged by the harsh chemicals in throttle cleaner resulting in compression leak issues. Might have to use compression test and leakdown test to isolate this possibility.

my 2 cents.

I did not spray on MAF only down the mouth of the tb after the butterfly valve. unless there is another MAF inside the tb?

cant clean off the gunk as spray down the tb.

Anyway i m thinking since its carb cleaner shouldnt the formula be safe to use in carbs & tbs?

Can point me to a mech / ws that can do compression & leakdown test?

Using w30 oil no oil loss.

As maf is situated nearer to air filter box side i clean that using electrical contact spray. Is that ok?

May i know whats the concern for using cleaner spray on high mileage engine?

Thanks for all the replies

Try cleaning the hot wire in the MAF unit using contact cleaner mend for electronic components with a fine brush. Chances when you spray the cleaner more dirts from the surrounding surfaces may have break-off and landed on the hot wire surfaces. When cleaning don't apply too much force as the wire are coated, once damaged the sensitivity to air flow will be erratic resulting inaccurate generating of voltage.

Don't disconnect battery for high end european cars unless you have a back up battery connected via the cigarrette lighter socket or OBD2 socket.

All collected info will be loss and the on-board computer will have to be reset to default with a OEM scanner

Screw with five sided drive and a small protrution in the centre is know as "five sided TS Tamperproof screw". Six sides is know as tamperproof Torx in US
