Are some forum rules unique in SGP?

What comes to mind is the 'ban' on clones....

I dont do clone as one account is enough for me, too many accounts only mean more passwords to remember in one signle forum.. not my cup of tea.

Anyway, if a person likes to have more than one account/nick, why restrict him? Whether he 'misbehaves' with one account or a few other accounts, what difference does it make?

Social / Car forums are not like online business online transactions where some degrees of 'true identity' etc have to be maintained, they are just for light hearted stuff even thought the exchanges could get heated, but hey, once the PC is off, things disappear and only reappear again after the next logon.

That said, there must be some reasons/history that make 'clone' a ban-able 'offence'.... not sure if this is only unique in SGP or its common all over the world to ban clones? [:)]

I have been a mod in a couple of overseas forums and frequent some HK forums which also have a very strong anti-clone policy, so I don't think this is just a Singapore thing.

Turbocharged

People who create clone, chances of being a forum troll is higher.. and we all know, forum trolls are a form of pest which not only irritates other forumers, but is also a waste of bandwidth and storage space..

Personally i dont see a need for clones, unless i like to talk to myself and therefore need it.

I tried google but have not hit anything that give reasons for the ban. I guess although cloning itself is a neutral thing, but it can be abused no doubt. Its like nose digging itself is a neutral act, but if its done in public, it becomes not so neutral.

Using clones to create tilted poll results is another 'abuse' i can think of (as i write this, i try to figure out other reasons).

Other than this, clones are pretty 'useless'.

I agree if in doubt, or if there's no good reasons for them, the safer bet is to ban clones...... [:)]

Cos when u cr8 clone u waste the Storage Space -_-

But does it really?

lets say i have ten points to post:- using one account i will post the ten points in say 10 posts... if i have two accounts, the 10 posts will be split under the two accounts, either way i end up adding the same 10 posts to the system.... not really waste of storage space.

but i guess pple who have cloned accounts dont really do what i have just described?

Sounding a bit 'academic' i guess [:)]

As a mod, it must be quite a task to monitor, kick-out clones....

Do overseas forums exposed/announce the identity (not real name, but original nick lets say) of the clone makers as a deterant?

btw, if you read chinese/canton, wonder how they say clone in HK? [:)] If by chance you know of some good car forums in HK, may i know the links please?.... from what i read in HK car mags, their views on cars can be insightful etc.

The few HK forums I frequent don't usually expose the clones or talk about them outright, they usually ban them and lock or delete their nonsense posts. These forums don't generally ban the clones immediately unless they post in a manner which makes it obvious they are clones and are out to cause trouble. A couple of US forums I was a mod in did have a "name and shame" policy, though.

One of the common Cantonese terms for clones in HK forums is "分身L" (lazy form of "Fan San Lan" 分身撚"). The "lan 撚", almost always shortened to an L when used to insult someone online, is used crudely as the equivalent of LJ (don't need to spell this out [laugh] ) and is widely applied in forums to all sorts of other things or people, for instance "暑假L" (literally summer holiday dick - a term for the numerous troublemakers and nonsensical people who seem to suddenly appear during school holidays), "快線L" (literally fast lane dick - a term for road hoggers) and "Cam L" (a term for people with in-car cameras who post every single little incident on Youtube).

Try http://www.discuss.com.hk - it is probably the most popular forum with countless sub-forums for nearly anything under the sun.

Clones are useful.

It can convey two ideas in different manner and get different response.

Sometimes it's hard to get out of a particular identity. Using a clone you can!

Clones can also help to support each other, in case an unfair opinion has being forced upon one identity.

Thanks so much for sharing the info especially the HK ways of calling people [:)] I will be in HK later part of June for some 'rubbish' food and cheapo hobby look-see-may-buy-only-its-cheap (mostly car-related stuff, eg remote control, diecast etc). besides those shops around MongKok, i will google to see where else to visit.

Have not visited HK in summer before.... sweating everyday now??

Clones are usually abused by trolls to create havoc..

i thought clones and trolls are quite closely related? in-fight? :D:D

seriously, if these characters are left to talk to themselves, probably they will die a natural dealth, its a matter of time [:)]

I have thought along the same line also. I guess if clones are used correctly and not causing nuisance to others, they are not as harmful as we imagine

Very hot, but still, nothing out of the ordinary to me, compared to the hotter months in Singapore. On the hottest days when temperatures get above 31 or 32 degrees the observatory will raise a "very hot weather warning" and warn everyone to stay indoors if possible, but in fact the hottest days are sometimes not that humid so its still tolerable. Some cloudier days are not that hot but more humid.

Have you visited Kwong Wa Street in Mongkok before? Those hobby stuff can be found all over Mongkok but are most concentrated in this street.

ya, kwong wa st... near the hospital... still remember the faces of some shop owners there :D

wife will frown when she see me go back to hotel room with boxes/bags of 'goodies' from these shops...

i should be hopping over to Macau and try the kart track there... what happened to the old Kai Tuk airport building which used to housed an indoor kart track? (read about it 3-4 years ago but didnt visit it in the past even last year when i was there)
