The government wants to hear from you over the next few years, as it formulates a national sports masterplan that will span the next two decades. Called Vision 2030, the aim is to harness the power of sports to aid individual development, community bonding and nation building. "We want the public to participate actively in co-creating Vision 2030 because we believe everyone has a stake in it," said Mr Chan Chun Sing, the Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports on Monday. "This brings us to the next lap for sports - by everyone, for everyone, and with everyone." The first stage of the sports masterplan will be ready by early next year. From Tuesday, the public can share its ideas and feedback at www.vision2030.sg. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_691910.html ↡ Advertisement

Jman888 Moderator July 19, 2011 Share July 19, 2011 and end up like this Champion gymnast's downfall shocks China A champion gymnast forced to turn to begging after injury ended his career prematurely has become a media sensation in China after a fan recognised him eking out a living on the streets of Beijing. Zhang Shangwu's case throws the spotlight on the plight of top athletes in China, who are taken from their homes as young as five to be trained in special schools, then struggle to adjust to normal life once their careers are over. The 27-year-old said he had been inundated with requests for interviews and offered jobs by well-wishers, including one of China's richest men, after his spectacular fall from grace was made public and splashed across newspapers. "In China, there are many athletes who have experienced the same thing as me, so I'm one of the lucky ones as the media and society uncovered my plight," he told AFP in a telephone interview. Zhang said he won two gold medals at the 2001 Universiade, an international sports event for university athletes that took place in Beijing, but a year later sustained a tendon injury which brought his promising career to an end. With little education, he took jobs as a waiter and a care worker, but his injuries hampered his ability to work and he was eventually forced to turn to theft, spending nearly five years in jail before being released in April. Then last week his luck changed when he was recognised performing stunts on the street for money, and his story has now been picked up by dozens of media outlets. Billionaire recycling magnate Chen Guangbiao even offered to give him a job, although Zhang said he was too busy with media interviews to think about what he would do next. Authorities in the northern province of Hebei, where Zhang is from, refused to comment when contacted by AFP, but his story has captured the public imagination and raised questions about the state's duties to former athletes. Weightlifter Cai Li, a gold medalist at the 1990 Asian Games who could only find work as a security guard after he retired, died in 2003 from causes related to years of hard training. And national champion weightlifter Zou Chunlan was a bathroom attendant for years after she retired because she was unable to get a better job. A local women's group eventually helped her get her own laundry shop. "Should there not be people responsible for someone who leaves his parents when he is five years old and lives a life of physical and mental exhaustion, as if he were in prison?" said one user of the Twitter-like Weibo service. Acieed 1st Gear July 19, 2011 Share July 19, 2011 In the U.S., sports start from very young in the family and in schools. Everyone is very passionate about sports, whole families go to junior tournaments, high school tournaments even on rainy days. College games are akin to professional sports, wildly supported by their town councils, local community, local businesses, local TV, etc. In SG, I think school games are not even supported by their own schools in the name of academic priorities. At least during my time, that was how it was. Often, we forgot there are important things to be learnt from sportsmanship and community support, that can never be taught in the classrooms. Instead of cultivating this passion, we are teaching our children everything has a short-cut by offering $$$$. How sad it is. edited: not going to happen, in Singapore climate (i mean the society, culture, population make-up, just the way things are) US got NFL National Football League, the (no doubt ideal, but imo not going to happen) sports culture in Singapore also NFL = Not f--king Likely Kenny
Mike1234 1st Gear July 19, 2011 Share July 19, 2011 (edited) Our Stadium took how long to complete? Our changi motorsports track took how long to complete? Now still no news yet... Our table tennis womens team are filled wif ALL FTs... Most Sports teams requires FTs becos we want the best in terms of performance....Thus forsaking those young local talents... Our SG soccer team got how many FTs? Last time in 04 tiger cup, our local team is filled wif almost half the first team players whom are FTs... Etoile, a french team whom are ameatur french players won the 1st SLEAGUE in their 1st year! This is a joke to our local Sleague where it's a "professional league" To conclude: We have to give more chances to our young local talents... Yes, we do need FTs...But we dont need a whole team of FTs....A few would do... FTs should be professional...Not those ameatur types... We need to be more professional...E.g we should run a soccer league like how Japan, South Korea or even like Thailand does We should telecast our local sports events "Live" from our National media company Edited July 19, 2011 by Mike1234

Sk65 1st Gear July 19, 2011 Share July 19, 2011 my take on this matter being gold medallist and being good from sports, are two different aspect. i would be glad if we are labelled a sporty nation, with low obesity % la... engaging in sports every week la the gold medal carrot = $250K i rather the sports ministry spend the $$ to promote a healthy country
Adrianli Hypersonic July 19, 2011 Share July 19, 2011 We should telecast our local sports events "Live" from our National media company Yeah!!! Mediacorp should revive CH12 which was the sports channel. I miss Darryl David and Mark Richmond. Used to watch World of Sports every sunday noon, presented by Darryl David and Mark Richmond. They can setup a dedicated sports channel and show all kinds of sporting events happening in SG from pri to sec to jc to poly to uni to national n international levels. Sure to fill up the daily time slots.

Leok777 Clutched July 19, 2011 Share July 19, 2011 Whole life they move goal posts ! Last time goal 2010 we suppose to qualify for world cup, then when it didn't happen they say it was just an ideology! Pui!now come up with 2030. Think they should try 2100, then buy the brazil football team then we have a chance. They don't look at it at the lowest level, which is that if education is the be all n end all then how are we to develop true sportsmen. Our smart Alec leaders think medals can be bought by importing talent..... Same as their FT policy.
