'No fare hike till service improves': Tan Kin Lian

By Zakir Hussain

PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Tan Kin Lian wants the Public Transport Council (PTC) to delay fare hikes until transport operators improve the quality of service.

He echoed public complaints about operators SBS Transit and SMRT.

Members of the public have expressed unhappiness that the two operators are seeking to raise fares with no improvement in service. They have complained about crowded buses and trains, and unreliable service.

Mr Tan wrote on his blog: 'I echo the views of the public and wish to ask the Public Transport Council to delay any fare increase until the public transport operators can provide more capacity and improve the standard of service, namely to provide a more comfortable ride with shorter waiting and travelling time.'

He also urged Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew and the Land Transport Authority 'to take urgent steps to revamp' the public transport system.

Mr Tan, a former chief executive of insurance cooperative NTUC Income, has in recent years suggested ways to improve public transport, including more regulation."

Previously Lui says transport service need improvement. Now A tan goes one step further by saying "NO" to fare increase until situation improves. Somehow I feel it might not make much of a difference & fare increase will pass through (remember fare review was postponed to after GE???).

And the thing about fare increase is not to IMPROVE their service but to maintain its present standard. So without increase, the service would decrease!!!

[sleeping] Yak yak yak....

It's becos of the sudden influx & increase in population that have caused this transport issue. That's what happen when the ministries do not work hand in hand on planing & implementing the policies. It's common sense that the service have to be increased to meet the demand in ridership thus increasing transport fare. Say "NO" also no use lah.

The govt had created this mess and to make the ppl pay is downright insulting.

Live and let's live . . . ^_^

We have gone thru bygone era, generation to generation and used to it by now, we talk shop and talk c#@k, only time will tell if we can lives thru the ages.

Today is sugar increase, next day is chicken and eggs issue, what next on the agenda . . . the list goes on, we live a day w/o fight on inflation and the saga in telco war fight on EPL coverage, petrol cartel all time high, mad cow disease, virus breakout, scandals after scandals.

What does not hurt us does not kill us either, problem was where and how does it trigger off . . .

Now transport fare increase, we can do NOTHING about it, coz every single one of us, one way or another takes the MRT to work, play and live, it may not affect those who drives, our children, relatives and friends who do not owe cars suffered too, the consequences are tremendous.

The law of physic works against us, things goes up must comes down, but it dos not work this way, or does it . . . anymore !! [:p]

Are we sincerely gonna to believe that the ministerial will sit down and hear us ( after the GE is over ) for the increase? Im be happy to know if they do, bt I doubt so, two transport had sat down and agreeing on the proposal.

What they had done was only a show ( wayang ) to show that they had used the ' protocol ', hence the necessary action, of couse we know the fundamentals has works against them, with petrol increase, high labour, maintenance cost and overheads etc,

Tis mode of transportation was meant for public usage, and public has it's entitlement, i doubt there isn;t any much the Gahmen can do to stop the increase, Good try TKL, we appreciate the gesture and the spirit. THANK YOU sir !

What we really need is not increase for the sake of increases, WHO VOTED THOSE MEN ' IN ' must be accountable for and they must come to a solution to serve the people's NEEDS and WANTS.

They can say what they likes & support the masses, but I don smell the roses anymore . . . why so, coz it get rotten by the day faster than expected.
