Outrage after koala found screwed to pole in Australia

SYDNEY - A dead koala has been found screwed to a pole in Australia in a "sickening" act that sparked outrage Thursday on social media.

Koala Rescue Queensland (KRQ) responded to a report of one of the furry animals climbing a picnic shelter at Brooloo Park Lookout near Gympie, 175 kilometres (around 100 miles) north of Brisbane, on Wednesday (Jan 10).

But on closer inspection it was found to be dead and screwed in place.

"This poor koala has been screwed to the pole with building screws," it said on Facebook.

"He is deceased, but whether or not he was when cruelly attached to the structure is unknown." KRQ president Murray Chambers said he thought he was hearing things when told about the incident.

"We've had koalas shot a few times. We've had them deliberately run over, but this is the first time some nutcase has actually screwed a koala to a building," he told broadcaster ABC.

"You know, I mean, what's wrong with society? Just makes you feel sick in the guts." The gruesome find sparked outrage on the KRQ Facebook page, with hundreds of comments slamming the "sickening" act.

"Hard to imagine that anyone could stoop so low," said Tim Siggs, while Elly Bunting added: "Absolutely horrendous. I really hope these grubs are caught and are dealt with and NOT with a slap on the hand."

The much-loved koala has been under increasing threat across Australia in recent decades, particularly from habitat loss, disease, dog attacks and bushfires.

A 2012 national count placed total numbers at 330,000, though their tree-top habitat makes accurate assessment difficult.

It is not the first time a koala has been mistreated.

In November, one was found dead in Victoria state with both its ears cut off, the latest in a spate of animal mutilations around the town of Warrnambool.

Police said at the time it followed a series of kangaroo and wallaby mutilations in the area.

Earlier last year, a kangaroo was found shot dead, dressed in leopard-print, and tied to a chair holding a bottle of ouzo, also in Victoria state.

Woman asks for money to return girl’s lost dog, ends up dropping it from 6th floor window In a heartbreaking scene, the girl was reunited with her beloved pet for only a brief time before it died from its injuries.

Yesterday, a young woman in Chengdu was reunited with her beloved lost pet for only a few brief and heartbreaking moments before it breathed its last after apparently being thrown out of a 6th floor window.

Xiao Wu, a 21-year-old girl living in the city’s Longquanyi District had adopted a Corgi which she named “Ryan” (莱恩) six months ago. The two quickly developed a bond and she went into a panic last month when her dog went missing.

Xiao Wu and her family looked all over the city for Ryan, but with no success. Finally, she spoke with a neighborhood security guard who told her that he had found the dog and, thinking that it was a stray, had given it to a pair of men.

Xiao Wu was able to track down these men who said that they had found the dog too noisy and had passed the pup along to a woman in her thirties who lived nearby. Xiao Wu was able to get the woman’s contact information and began “negotiating” to get her dog back.

The woman, given the pseudonym He Li, frightened Xiao Wu during their social messaging exchanges. At times, it appeared as though she simply wanted money: “Do you have a lot of money?” she once asked Xiao Wu.

While other times, she teased and even threatened Xiao Wu, writing that she planned to do harm to Ryan: “I asked my daughter, do you want the dog alive or dead… If my daughter didn’t like it, I would kill it. Right now, she likes it very much.”

And in another conversation she wrote that Xiao Wu should hand over her “living expenses” or she would be sent a video of a dog being “skinned and roasted.”

Yet another WeChat exchange shows how Xiao Wu offered to spend up to 10,000 yuan to buy He Li another dog. However, the woman responded that Xiao Wu ought to just buy herself a new dog instead.

These few rainy days I see some dog owners taking their dogs out for walks on the rainy days. Owners take umbrella shield themselves while the dog walked in the rain, barefooted.

Is this considered animal abuse?

SINGAPORE: A 23-year-old man was sentenced to three months’ jail on Thursday (Feb 8) for ill-treating his now ex-girlfriend’s family pet, and eventually killing the dog by flinging it against the wall.

Gerald Kok Zhin Oi is also banned from owning an animal for one year from the date he is released from jail.

Kok was convicted of four of seven charges of abusing Treasure the toy poodle on multiple occasions between July and December 2016.

He admitted to hitting the three-year-old dog with a sofa cushion and plastic clothes hanger, and repeatedly flinging Treasure against the wall.

“It all started in July when Treasure bit (Kok) for no reason,” Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) prosecutor Yap Teck Chuan said.

The dog belonged to Kok’s girlfriend’s brother, who installed a CCTV camera in his bedroom to keep on an eye on Treasure. He suspected Kok had hit Treasure, and told his mother not to leave Kok alone with the dog.

Kok admitted he ill-treated the dog on a few occasions over the following months, culminating in the fatal incident on Christmas Day in 2016.

The family left the house at about 5.20pm on Dec 25, leaving Kok alone with Treasure. At the void deck, Kok’s girlfriend’s mother recalled her son telling her not to leave Kok alone with the dog.

Kok’s girlfriend returned to the flat immediately, and caught Kok standing near her bedroom with bloodied tissue. She saw Treasure lying bloodied and motionless on the floor. She took the dog to the vet, where Treasure was pronounced dead.

An X-ray showed it had suffered neck and skull fractures due to blunt force trauma to the head.

Kok had lied that he was carrying Treasure to the bedroom when he slipped and fell, the prosecutor said. However, the CCTV camera had captured Kok hitting the dog and flinging it across the bed.

DOG SUFFERED PROLONGED ABUSE: PROSECUTOR

The prosecutor sought three-and-a-half months’ jail, saying Treasure had suffered prolonged abuse and must have been traumatised.

Defence lawyer Josephus Tan said 10 weeks’ jail would be appropriate, and objected to the prosecutor’s remark: “He is not a dog whisperer,” the lawyer said, and should not be allowed to say Treasure felt traumatised.

In sentencing Kok to three months’ jail and banning him from becoming a pet owner for one year, District Judge May Mesenas urged Kok to seek help.

“There are consequences when you give vent to your anger. Only you know what triggered it, but you need to get some help so it doesn’t happen again,” she told Kok, encouraging him to reflect on his actions while behind bars.

For ill-treating Treasure, Kok could have been jailed for up to 18 months and fined up to S$15,000 on each charge.
