Downtown East murder: charges reduced

By Shaffiq Alkhatib | Posted: 14 September 2011 1515 hrs

SINGAPORE: Four youths accused of killing a 19-year-old student at the Downtown East entertainment hub in Pasir Ris last year have had their murder charges reduced to that of rioting.

They are: Chong Rui Hong and Ng Wei Lun, both 19 years old, 20-year-old Puay De Feng and 21-year-old Jason Chew Wei Beng.

While those convicted of murder will be sent to the gallows, the young men can instead be jailed up to seven years and caned if they are found guilty of rioting.

All four are now accused of being members of an unlawful assembly whose common object was to cause grievous hurt to Darren Ng Wei Jie on October 30, 2010.

Court documents stated that one or more members of the group allegedly used violence on the Republic Polytechnic student by stabbing and slashing him with knives, choppers as well as a screwdriver.

Puay and Chew will be back in court on September 28 while the case involving the other two will be mentioned again next month.

Eight other youths, between 16 and 22-year-old, who are also believed to be involved in the case still face murder charges.

They include 20-year-old Stilwell Ong Keat Pin and 21-year-old Ho Wui Ming.

The group allegedly attacked Darren between 5.30pm and 6pm at the main foyer of Downtown East on October 30. He succumbed to his injuries and died in Changi General Hospital about five hours later.

Seven of these youths will have their cases re-mentioned on November 2.

An eighth alleged accomplice, 21-year-old Lewis Wee Jun Jie will be back in court on September 19.

they are only 27++ years old upon release... still can be very impulsive and hot tempered

and they might think committing such crime is chickenfeed, just go in squat for a few years only

such light punishment shall not do any good for them and the society... wrong message sent

all should be hanged to send out a strong deterrence to others..something is very wrong when the punishment for drug trafficking is higher than murder

x2

What kind of message are they sending by doing this? They live to tell the tale, emboldening others to do the same...

Long lost faith in our Police and Judicary system..

Bro, a number of them involved, how to charge every individual for manslaughter?

one or two "leaders" should be given stiffer punishment...

or the one who stabbed the victim be punished with manslaughter

if not, all the aggressors will attack as a team... since the most they will be charged is rioting

punish the "leaders" jialat jialat so that the pack of wolves will be disorganised

The law never says leader will get heftier punishment......leader can be in command but never participates also....then how?

The fact is someone was killed by these people, maybe it is very difficult for the authorities to single out who actually delivered the blows which caused the death of the person, BUT in my personal opinion, the very act of participating by these people in cornering a person and assaulting him with deadly weapons warrants a more serious charge than just rioting.

Look towards US law - it's called felony murder I think.

If you are committing a crime, and someone is murdered you can be charged with murder, whether or not you participated directly in the killing.

I think this case should be the same.

Unless there is something we don't know

Let's see the final outcome, hang a few is enough to send a strong message. The rest must be caned a few times.

Met some really nice gangsters in army but some just deserve to be shot at.
