Chinese New Year traditionally is give ang bao to married or else. Otherwise, need to give is not necessary

depends on the family, there might be good reasons

kids you not sure belongs to which relatives = dun give

 

relative you dun recognize but give you ang pow = take and then disappear (in case they discovered you are actually not related)

 

only put small amount into the ang pow

$1 coin plus one sweet for those relative's kids you dun recognize but you recognized their parents

one guaji plus one sweet, for those kids looking at you hoping for ang pow
