Primary 1 registration

'By allowing parents who live farther away to volunteer, schools lower the chances of those who live nearer.'

MS CECILIA TEO: 'I signed up as a parent volunteer at a popular school in my area to increase the chances of my first child's enrolment in Primary 1. I did so although we live less than 2km from the school. But I was told that children of parent volunteers are not guaranteed a place and that balloting is required. I know it is not possible to abolish the parent volunteer system because schools need volunteers. But at least restrict it to families living nearby. By allowing parents who live farther away to volunteer, schools lower the chances of those who live nearer. I hope the Ministry of Education will review the arrangement. There are many parents like me who want to enrol their children in schools nearby, because of the convenience rather than because the schools are top schools or popular choices.' [/color]

Parents like to complain the slightest things when it comes to schools.

Come on lah.....go sleep with the principal or head mistress.....sure first choice !!

The parent volunteer scheme is intended - even though it will never be officially admitted - to give the children of volunteers who live more than 1km away (and without any other school affiliation) a fighting chance to get into their school of choice. Even though there's supposed to be a chance for those living between 1 to 2km to ballot, in the case of "hot" schools, the chance is actually zilch, because all the places are already snapped up by the higher priority cases. So Cecilia is feeling very buay song about having to compete with those living (say) 10km away, but too bad, that's life.

A friend of mine moved to Toa Payoh specifically to increase the chance that their child can get into a elite primary school. They succeeded in being within 1km of it.

On top of that they had to do 60hrs of parent volunteering work with NO guarantee that their kid will be able to enter the P1 class.

They got their wish [;)]

What that should be removed is the priority given to grassroots members, which is placed above that of parent volunteers and families distance to school.

I have heard of cases of those whose balloting chances are lesser using this "backdoor" to improve their kid's chances of getting into the school.

the system have to be fair and just across the board...should stop giving priorities to grassroot members...those people performing grassroot activities do it for the sake of community service???? or other motives - to gain special treatment....balloting for every single place should be fair....or first come first serve

A....PV scheme is the biggest mistake and shld cease its existence as it created far too many controversials rather than benefits... Personally, i hv the scheme shld be rid out.

PV scheme for a good and famous sch tends to select parent volunteers of a special elite gp..I knw of a sch that admit to that n it is not within MOE's purview to control how the sch select these PVs... so it did nt create a fair level playing field and the suggestion of each given the same number of chips is nothing but BS.

There r also issues such as PRs given the equal rights as a normal citizen in enrolment of their child to the sch of their choice. Reason given by MOE was to include diversity within the sch which is crap.

If truly govt wanted to introduce a fair level playing field that remove PV scheme, remove PR's priviledges such as having equal enrolment rights. Allow Singaporeans to register based on their sch distance from home of the parents or caretaker first followed by PRs then foreigners.

This unhappy sentiments have been ongoing for many years and when it hit the year of GE.... some votes are lost because of disgruntle parents over the P1 enrolment. Anyway no matter what is said, MOE will always be slow to change and because of such a mindset. Remember this, our education system produce zero or near zero talents and hence we will need to import more...
