My ah pa always tell me to keep my big mouth shut, rather people think that I am stupid then to open my mouth to confirm it.

Comments to media sparked online backlash

Baey was at the receiving end of a wave of online furore over the past two days following his comments in Wednesday's The New Paper on a Chinese scholar studying here who made the "There are more dogs than people in Singapore" remark on his web blog.

After almost 40 posts attacking him were posted on his fan page wall, Baey published a transcript of what he said to the newspaper over a phone interview, where he explained that Singaporeans should not jump to conclusions over the comment the student, Sun Xu, had made.

The note he posted on his Facebook profile and shared on his fan page attracted almost 350 comments, some of which were positive but most were negative sentiments from internet users, who questioned his choice of words, his statement that citizens should "reflect upon (themselves)", and even his loyalty to Singapore, among other things.

When asked about the fiery reactions to his initial comments, Baey told Yahoo! Singapore he accepted, understood and appreciated the sentiment expressed in them.

While several users took issue with the fact that he felt the need to deconstruct Sun's offending line while speaking to TNP, Baey said at that point he was striving to be as rational as possible about the situation.

"I have to be accountable for what I say, whether published in the media or otherwise," he said, explaining why he published the transcript of his phone interview with the paper, with the hope of setting context to his words.

"I thought at the time, let's not jump to conclusions. Yes, certain words can be hurtful but let's not punish (the whole community because of) one person… we shouldn't just pick on one word (or phrase) and that's it, condemn the person for life just because he's said that.

"My point was please, let's not enlarge or expand it to say that all foreign students are bad — that's very dangerous."

It was CLEARLY taken out of context. Check out his facebook page for the full transcribed interview.

I did not expect my comments on this topic to spark off such a big debate online. I respect the differing views but hope that our society does not become divisive as it is no good for Singapore. We are all Singaporeans.

Media reports may not have been able to represent my views accurately or holistically (but I do not give that as an excuse), and my further clarifications to these reports may not have helped.I would like to share my take on this in the following bullet points:

That infamous remark

The remark by Sun Xu is wrong. I do not condone it.

Even if he is not on a Singapore government scholarship, he should not have done it.

We have to be responsible for our actions. He has apologized and has to face the NUS board of discipline. I trust the appropriate penalty will be imposed on him to send the right signal.

Moving Forward

this confirmed my theory that each time our MPs or minsters speak they need to explain once again as they are always misunderstood and taken it of context.

I think they are just not connected or lost touch with us peasants.

Maybe our England is bad...

It's more like words keep taken out of context, and also because of plagiarism plus news report also want to sell their articles well, may sometimes rephrase and turn out to be slightly different meaning. This slightly different meaning when different people read, it translate into different views and that different views sometimes become exaggerated with the whole message become not what they actually mean.

This remind me of:

"The assessment of an individual is a very difficult thing and a person whom you may have known for five or 10 years may have some weaknesses which are uncovered only later, or which may develop later."

Despite his clarification, I thought there is still some twisting and turns at his end to deflect the accusations.

He said:

I read somewhere that says:

Those who knows, do not speak. Those who speaks, do not know.

Not saying anything, 'nothing is left undone'.

I read this phrase from a trading book, the author refer this to traders, those traders that speak a lot abt their trading to ppl usually trade poorly, those trader that seldom speak abt their trading usually trade very well.

Ya..

-----

The universities have scholarships for foreign students like Sun Xu. For these scholarships, if there are Singaporeans who are better, or as good as these foreign students, these Singaporeans should be given the scholarship instead of foreigners.

----

So .. this is not taken out of context, then? The universities reserve scholarships for foreigners.

Should be given != Are given

- What is the cut off points for these foreigners to qualify?

- How many places are reserved for foreigners?

- Do all Singaporeans who qualify for a place get in before the foreigners, even if it means reducing the reserved places for the foreigners?

- or do Singaporeans who qualify NOT given a place, because the reserved seats for foreigners squeezing out the qualified singaporeans?
