Football: Why four footballers did not play against Iraq

By Shamir Osman, TODAY | Posted: 09 March 2012 0621 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Lions' 7-1 humiliation at the hands of Iraq in their final World Cup qualifier on Feb 29 in Doha drew the ire of local fans in the country.

With Iraq already through and Singapore out of the running for a spot in the fourth round, the match had little significance.

Prestige and pride was at stake though, along with ranking points, and national coach Radojko Avramovic was lambasted, with some even calling for his head.

The Serb cited a lack of preparation time as one of the reasons for the poor performance, along with the fact he was missing Hariss Harun, Safuwan Baharudin, Shakir Hamzah and Yasir Hanapi - all full-time National Servicemen (NS) who were denied permission by the Singapore Police Force to travel with the team.

While national sportsmen may be granted unrecorded leave to represent the country in "selected major competitions", a Police spokesperson responded to queries from TODAY, saying: "As Singapore was already out of the running for the 2014 World Cup, this qualifying match does not fall under the list of selected major competitions."

But, considering it was a competitive 'A' international, and with a chance to blood young players at such a high level, perhaps it was an opportunity missed for Singapore football.

Former Woodlands Wellington coach Shasi Kumar was surprised that a World Cup qualifier did not qualify as a major competition in the eyes of the Police.

He said: "It is sad that our best players can't play at a high level like the World Cup, and it doesn't matter if it's an inconsequential game.

"But perhaps NSAs need to punish those who abuse the system so the rest can continue to benefit and do the nation proud."

Pennefather hopes that the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports' Vision 2030 - a proposed masterplan to turn Singapore into a sporting nation - will help address the issue.

She said: "If the vision and the will are both there, we can - we must - find a workable solution for athletes to do their national duty and at the same time continue to excel in their sport." - TODAY

So... does that 4 NS officers could make such a strong impact on SPF daily routine if they let them go for the competition.

Well to them World Cup is not a major competition although we are out of the competition. Does their code of conduct states "To Serve & To Protect".

So National pride is not in their agenda.. [sly] . They prefer that our NATIONAL footballers been humiliated oversea. Even if we lost by 1 goal, at least we lost with pride but not 7-1.

Sometimes, ones need to know that when we Singaporean are in oversea, they (other countries) reconise us by our Red Passport and we are from SINGAPORE. They won't reconise us as Mr so & so ....

It is more of not setting precedence than not releasing them I guess? No point letting go for something of low importance rather than serve their national service and off they go for their soccer or whatever?

Excuses la. Can a less humiliating win or draw be guaranteed with those 4 players? No one can tell right? [rolleyes]

Singapore soccer is dead. It's funny in a way to see how the media is so desperately trying to inject interest in it.

Sounds more like a lack of depth in local football. Without 4 ns boys and they are trashed like that? Come on ...
