Singapore is now in dire strait- with China building its might ie investment with all Asean country eg Vietnam, Philipine, Malaysia, Burma & others. Especially toward Malaysia as to circumvent- Singapore strategic location port- the railway will bypass the port & sooner a booming "shenzhen" with factory & residential in Johor will shift economic activity with China trading given the strong presence there .

There is no stopping what other can do- the only way out is to accept our diminish role in SE Asia- as the Chinese is taking a long term view in this Asia Pacific region. As a small country- we just need to reinvent our role- as to attract more investment from other regions- except China.

Sooner or later the RMB will be the next currency where all trade with China will be used instead of USD- RMB Convertibility may be sooner than later given the speed of China investment in Asia- Then Singapore will lose it financial hub in SEA. Of course for oil trading still use USD.

Better prepare for more volatility as Chinese chauvinist mindset is "unforgiving" if small country refuses to tag along as to ship to other destination instead of Singapore. China is our largest trading partner by GDP. 30 yrs of trading could be the end of a biz life cycle.

Singapore is doing the right thing not to stand on side with China (on the surface). Like it or not , Singapore role in S.E Asia will somehow be diminished on one front, but getting stronger on the other (Example on tech). We still need the West to provide such linkage. It is not just Singapore who is suffering from the bad economy.

Singapore must and should stick to the current policy if she wants to survive the next 50 years. Strengthen and build up and not just to solve immediate short sighted issues. Be the centre for future economy rather than be a follower. Singapore has no resources.

Bear in mind, China and Singapore has ties which are way much deeper than what most of us think. China is not stupid as she pumps money to gather allies. End of the day she knows who will do their part and is reliable when the crunch comes.

In an ironic way.

LKY wasnt shy about his role "advising" Teng about opening up china. . The economic boom created this dragon.

Then Lhl.. he blundered mightily. . No other way to describe.

But all this are taboo in our MSM and parliament.

Wow...situation has really changed rapidly over the last 2 months...

With the benefit of a little hindsight, I sense noticeable toning down by Singapore gov with regard to SCS since the Terrex-saga began over 2 weeks ago.

Compare to previously rather vocal diplomatic snafu from MFA, Vivian, LHL and our ambassador in  Beijing, I think our gov is now careful with their public rhetoric. Why I say that ?

Def minister Mr Ng was at a high-profile forum in US last Sunday where he told his American audience 2 things related to China, while avoiding the mention of SCS and "rule of international law"

a) that US cannot "contain" China.

"It is neither possible nor strategically necessary to contain China’s rise ..."

b)  Taiwan is "a core interest of China" and "we (Singapore) are very careful..and constructive."

Common sense tells me his speech is also an indirect signal to China that Singapore has quietly acknowledged the real reason behind Terrex saga is related to Singapore's past high-profile position LHL had taken towards the TPP and SCS dispute/ruling.

Both are closely related to (a) and (b) respectively.

Does that mean the eventual ceasing of Ex Starlight ?

That decision ultimately is in LHL hands.

Pride cannot be greater than pragmatism.

Most importantly, get the product back, make sure our principle remains unchanged on prosperity and progress for our nation.

The 20 DBS employees were arrested by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on suspicion of bribing senior staff to hand over customers’ personal data, which they then provided to mainland call centres, Apple Daily reported.

Relax man !

What HK authority is doing is according to their rules and regulations and with their legal jurisdiction.

So I am confident any fall out on DBS's reputation is restricted to the bank local branch.

Oh, just to highlight SCMP mentioned that HK is a key market for DBS, making up about 20% group profit.

Which gov-owned bank wanna screw up their ricebowl with a market access that has an exploding no. of middle-class and high-incoming customers in around Greater China, including the SCS ?  [inlove]

Do not believe 100% what the internet say, there is something called propaganda! Take a drive to Iskandar and see, what your eyes see in Iskandar telly with this YouTube news?

Malaysia DR M tried to use port Klang to replace Singapore but fail why? Cause the people!!! Software issue! Same Iskandar will never be Shenzhen cause diff breed of local population there.

Change sea route? Cut a hole in Thailand? I heard about Thailand will have a Suez Canal and cut a hole in 1980s during primary school and both never happened...... will it happen today? Majority Buddhist and minority Muslim in Thailand and most Muslim Thai are near Malaysia south of Thailand . If Thailand cut a canal over there can also let the Muslim rule the southern land indirectly.

Again like my previous post all this china propaganda in YouTube and others internet news hear hear is ok dun believe 100%

Since the 1500 Asia countries were the vassal states of China

and tribute had to be paid to the Emperor.

This includes India where the Chinese taught them how to fish

with these big nets that are still used today.

:D

That fishing technique is still in practiced today in India.

When Chinese introduced this method to the South Asian over 500 years ago, China already had lay claimed to the SCS islands having frequent that maritime route by exploiting the monsoon trade winds with the help of these vassal states (including Malacca)

That was how the maritime silk route came about which brought Chinese merchants ships to ME and the spread of Islam and Hinduism etc and many other knowledge across SEA and the Middle Kingdom.

Singapore was a flourishing trade hub with Chinese living in here long before Zheng He pass the Singapore Straits and way before the British came in 1817.

Dude,

Things are always changing and with that complacency and ignorance displayed, one cannot expect Singapore can last another 20 years of "prosperity", let alone celebrating SG100.  Years from now our aging children may look back in awe on their fore father's achievements - what changed ?

The people with their ignorance.

More Good Years ? Or ignorance bliss ?
