SMRT raises bus drivers' pay

SINGAPORE: SMRT on Thursday raised the basic monthly salary for Singaporean bus drivers.

The bus drivers will now get S$1625, a 35 per cent increase compared to the previous pay of S$1,200.

SMRT said with the change, bus drivers could expect to take home about S$2,500 per month, including overtime, allowances and other incentives.

SMRT said current bus drivers would also receive a pay rise.

The public transport operator said the higher remuneration is aimed at attracting more Singaporeans into the industry.

The pay raise also comes on the back of a similar move by the other bus operator, SBS Transit, less than a month ago.

Singaporean bus drivers with SBS Transit now bring home a basic pay of S$1,600, compared to the S$1375 previously.

Remember all the argument about their pay.................. here you go.

Question. Who pays for it? The S$1B grant or loan or whatever you call it or SMRT itself?

Good in many sense. From the bigger picture, it is an injection of liquidity into the economy as the increased remuneration will have a trickle effect in the consumer market.

either that or nationalise these companies once and for all.

T2, cannot nationalise la. It will be a big slap on the old geeks face for he was the one who allowed it to be privatised in the name of efficiency and competition.

The cronies will baulk unless its done at an extremely high valuation. [:(]

Good for the drivers. I have a friend's father who drives buses and he did followed him throughout the whole journey. It's not an easy job esp now with the heavy traffic conditions. [sweatdrop]

I hope more locals will join in now with the pay raise. [thumbsup]
