Hi Friends,My Camry Engine check light is on,my mechanis said most likely is one of the O2 sensors faults,is O2 sensors 'Tear & wear" items.??Anyone replace before.?What is the costs like.??Thanks guys.

No.!Just overtook a van with 'kickdown'....anyway,the car just drive like normal....but mechanic said it may use a bit more fuel.

Seems like very little or no person have changed their O2 sensors before...should not be a tear & wear item.

think the damage depends on car.. I changed for my legacy.. quite ex at $400 for quite a small piece of wiring with a sensor head (but subaru parts usually more ex).. but consumption improved after the change.. response is slightly better as well.. most imptly, I no longer see that iritating CEL light..

 

I suggest you get them to use a computer to diagnose the problem rather than take the comment "most likely".. they did it for me and the o2 sensor error popped up..

it is an wear n tear item, but not very often replaced or damaged.

 

Depends on the make n model, most O2 sensor before the cat converter thats always gone 1st. Under normal usage, its unlikely to be faulty with the lifespand of average singaporean car unless your millage is extremly high, or you de-cat, or too much fuel additive used, or your engine oil leak to your combustion chanber and caused the sensor to fould.......

 

If you car is still new, and millage is low, you should try to find out the cause of it, rather than just changing the sensor...

 

If I remember correctly, there is a topic in regards to 02 sensor replacement few months back in this forum. You may want to do a search...

My vios stalled by itself every other standstill at traffic light. Diagnose at Borneo with fault O2 sensor. Cost 400+ for one and was told to replace both. In the end went to stockist and bought it for $140 for a piece. Labour $80.

reason i asked is because recently, after returning from a trip in malaysia with full tank of petrol from petronas. my CEL also lid up after travelling about 200km. The mechanic whom i spoke to asked if i have just returned from malaysia and he mentioned it's a common problem if the car has been using malaysia petrol too frequently.

 

He went on to reset the error code and ask me to monitor the car again. I went on to pump singapore petrol for a few tanks and the problem didn't surface again.

 

there maybe some truth that the quality of malaysia petrol will indeed affect the o2 sensor.

So i think after 115kkm,my O2 sensor fail is normal,thanks for all the replies,anyway just a strange feeling,the car 'feels' more powerful with a failed sensors....i wonder is it because it cause the car run 'richer'.??

I changed once on a integra. It only cost $150. O2 sensor is very sensitive, can spoil very easily if not handled properly.

I got my O2 sensor replaced for my newly acquired 7 1/2 yr Vios. The second hand car dealer in Bukit Batok Crescent apparently altered the mileage reading to 90000km when he sold the car to me.

My mechanic advised that this part hardly breakdown as such mileage.

I change my O2 sensors @ around 130kkm.  Most mechanics worldwide recommend changing the sensors every 100~200kkm. Again, why change if it ain't broken. 

 

Symptoms :

 

a) "Rough" Engine, you feel that the engine is very rough as if you felt that the piston is very tight.  EO level is normal.

b) Acceleration hesitation 

c) Inconsistent FC

d) Poor FC

 

Type of Sensors :

 

a) How many wires ?

 

There are 1 wire, 2 wire, 3 wire and 4 wire.

 

Most sensors (2006 onwards) are 3/4 wires, 2 wires for sensors and 2 wires for heater.  Cars that come with 4 wires usually are able to "warm up" faster.  Warm up as in the Engine ECU enter closed loop operation.  It usually do that within 1 min or so as the heater heatup the sensor to 600C and the sensor become operation.

 

So when you buy a new car, try to look for O2 sensors.

 

b) Narrow or Wideband Sensors

 

Most cars today uses Narrow Band O2sensors, the sensors are tuned to a particular stochastic Fuel to Air ratio of 14.7. It output signal is high or low voltage - 2 states.

 

Wideband Sensor measure the O2 level and output as a linear proportional signal as a function of surrounding air level.  Wideband generally offer a "wide" variable option for ECU decision making.  Hence, car equipped with WB Sensors generally have better performance and FC.

And it is very expensive.

 

Failure Analysis

 

When changing O2 sensors, take a look at the spent O2 sensors, it may provide tell tale sign of the failure :

 

Yellowish Coating on the sensor is caused by Lead Poisoning

Whitish Coating is due to Silicone Poisoning.

 

For normal wear and tear, the sensor usually look metallic greyish to black.

 

Poisoning could be due to aftermarket installation of fuel hoses, fuel additive meant for leaded fuel car etc.

 

It is the same way to check spark plug, so when O2 sensors failure is flagged, take a look at the spark plug first.

 

 

Performance Enhancement

 

There are aftermarket Narrow/Wide Band O2 sensors with altered stochastic Fuel to Air ratio, to let the engine burn richer for performance or leaner for extreme FC improvement.  While most ECU can recalculate  stochastic Fuel to Air ratio by MAF and Injector ON time number. Most ECU put this variance on a more tolerable range than required.

 

 

In Singapore, it is not common to replace O2 sensors as we usually scrap the car at 10th year.  In other countries, they change for better FC and efficiency of the car which have not statuary age limit on the road.

 

I changed and I got a "new" car feel, really smooth engine and good FC.

on my old car, Vios 2006, the wires to O2 sensor wires snap easily. Just get them to erase the error code and rewire up again n  u r good to go.

The 02 sensor is wear & tear but it should last at least 5 years or more.  You may ask your mechanic to diagnose it with a reader device.  Sometime the gasket leak may also caused the 02 sensor failure.  My previous car 02 sensor wear-off after 7 years and replaced for $350.
