Despite the high spirits during Friday's ceremony, the debut of the Model S is a critical moment for the fledgling car company.

 

Tesla has sold 2,150 Roadsters since 2008.

 

The company is the brainchild of PayPal billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. Tesla has always been considered a long shot to survive in the car business, but Musk, who is the chairman, CEO and product architect, spoke optimistically about the future, and of electric cars.

 

"It's about breaking a spell," he said. "The world has been under this illusion that electric cars cannot be as good as gasoline cars. It's showing that an electric car can in fact be the best car in the world."

 

Analysts and auto industry insiders have scoffed at the idea that a new car company could be created from scratch and built in a state with high operating costs like California.

 

The price tag on the Model S is also expected to limit sales, said Rebecca Lindland, an analyst with IHS Automotive.

 

Nissan has sold just under 30,000 all-electric Nissan Leaf hatchbacks since they went on sale at the end of 2010, but the Leaf is little more than half the price of a Model S.

When it cannot be taxed (for electricity), it cannot be on the road.

Environment? That's a joke, where revenue is concerned.

This is quite correct. Also, petroleum companies are very important partners of our govt and they have invested billions of dollars here (refineries etc). These companies may not be too happy if govt actively promote electric cars etc.

Zero demand due to the tax structure here.

 

I can say definately not the lack of charging infrastructure.

As private condo can easily install the charging points.

HDB also cn install,else those staying low level can pulls long extension cord to their electric cars.

 

It's the extra taxes imposed that killed these electric cars and bike.

 

Before LTA impose the licensing of the electric bicycle, we can see all sorts of people riding it. Parents use it to fetch children, ahpeh use it to go coffeeshop to la-kopi with kakis, etc.

But after the LTA come up with the ruling, need inspection, cannot have lithium powered motor exceeding certain KW, no hand trottle(like motorcycle), must be pedal activated, etc.

The electric bike suddenly drop off to a premature death.

There are a few exist here, or so i've been told but the sales office officially pulled out not just from Singapore, but the SEA region as well.

So much for promoting our nation to be leader of the cutting edge tech.

LTA considers it Category B. guess they were using bhp. Road Tax is accordingly. I think it was $2K for 6 months...

ZERO emissions is a total BS though......... Electric cars creates just as much pollution compared to petrol/diesel cars...........
