Doctors leave public sector for reasons other than money

Published on Jun 28, 2012

DR GERARD Chee's most obvious conclusion from the report ('Private versus public hospitals: More than twice as costly'; last Friday) was 'how poorly paid public hospital doctors are', as reflected in the lower cost of public health care ('Bill comparisons may not reflect true cost differences'; Tuesday).

This seems inappropriate. To put things into perspective:

Just my 2 cents worth ...

I have read both replies with regards to the issue of bills between private and public hospitals. I really do not see why people are complaining about bill sizes. If you feel that you want "better" treatment and "better" service, seek treatment in private hospitals. However, please ask the doctor how much he is charging!!

BUT if you choose a restructured hospital, the cost may be lower (I am not sure how much!) and is the treatment much "inferior"? Definitely not!

I want ALL to realise that the doctors in private sector were all trained in the public sector and a lot of the trainers are still in public hospitals for a variety of reasons e.g. academia, vocation, etc etc. Does it mean that doctors in public sectors "cannot make it" in the private sector? I hardly think so!

Why do doctors leave the public sector? I must agree that admin and academic pressures have a part to play but I also agree that certain doctors are lured by the monetary aspect of the private sector.

Do I want to drive a Porsche 911 GT3? Or a Bentley Continental GT Turbo? Yes!

BUT Do I want to sell my skills to the highest bidder and turn my back on my patients who needs it most or the medical students I teach? Definitely not!

IMHO

Bare-foot doctors [thumbsup][cool] , but sgp don't have muddy kampongs any more, so this species is endangered? [:(]

If doctor is no good, would he dare to go private?

Of course got good people in public service lah, but what is likelihood vs private sector?

The point here is lots of good doctors leave public to private.. money is a big reason among other reasons. If pay more (or cut admin more), maybe can retain more in public. Like Ministers loh. :D

actually, i pity the public doc....

They work something like 18 hr shift thru the night.. by the time they get to their last patient.. they just want to get it over with.

They have very little energy to show empathy for the patients and do their job right. If you really want to do the right thing.. then they seriously need to adjust their life to a more humane hrs.

Worse u need to deal with tons of politics... With some doctors sucking up to the directors to get into high paying programs. Might as well go private, earn at least 5 times more and more flexible time

Politic is everywhere.. Open own clinic will have it own set of problem e.g. sale target, rental , hires, upgrade path etc...

But i think the working hrs has to be adjusted to the very least

the facts that we cant really run away

singapore is becoming an INC

we dont promote well-being of the citizens are such enough but we are promoting our little country as a medical tourist destination

some docs may have say, i serve the people for 20 years with pittance salary, i have paid my dues

others docs may feel that this country is promoting $$$ is the only way, hence Dr. Susan Lim with a $39million bangalow in sentosa, Dr Huang with a Lambo, Dr. Woffles with only a $1000 fine

if you are a normal human being and not a monk or a priest

wont one be tempted

especially when the MOH is running the system with so many PRCs, Pinoys and etc

as a result complains from patients and so on

so the incentive to stay in public service is becoming less and less

if you compare an a&e doc who saves lives and work shifts (live a factory worker) and earn say $30,000 a month

when he compare to our minister, Dr. Bala, loosing $300mil and still got a pay rise, able to retain his $million dollar salary, confirmed and chopped secured million dollar pension

you ask yourself, wont we also be tempted

when everybody around is running after this sexy $$$$

and here you are being a humble doc, bare foot and all

at the end of the day, when you dont have any savings left to take care of yourself in your old age

can he go to the government and say, i did so much for our society, can you give me a place in a your worse old age home

what do you think the government will do

ask him to go to JB

I think medicine is a unqiue profession in the sense that its bottom line is about saving life. It should be filled with people who genuinely passionate about helping others and not money spinner wannabes

like i say...with this kind of working hrs.. i think it's very difficult for ppl to show passionate. After some yrs, i think the drive will dwindle with other commitments in life.
