Fair?

Some will say taxi driver job must be stressful.

Would you pay fine $1000 or one week jail?

A cabby who punched another taxi driver's head and face several times was jailed a week today.

54-year-old Chng Chuan Siak had pleaded guilty in May and had told the district court that he had lost his temper as the victim had made vulgar remarks about his mother who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

However, District Judge Low Wee Ping felt that Chng Chuan Siak's response was uncalled for and ill-fitted to any aggravation from the victim and agreed with the prosecutor that a jail sentence was appropriate.

The road rage incident happened on December 5, 2011, at 6pm at Singapore Expo Foyer 2's taxi stand.

Court documents state that Chng had not moved his taxi forward in the queue which caused Mr Low Swee Kuan's taxi to come up alongside his car. Chng then started gesturing wildly and was seen mumbling.

When Mr Low reversed to join the queue again, Chng alighted and approached Mr Low's vehicle before yelling at him.

Things took a turn for the worse after Mr Low hurled back Hokkien vulgarities about Chng's mother and was punched.

Chng said that he had just received news that his mother, who died in April this year, had an illness that was incurable.

He claimed that Mr Low had persisted in verbally attacking his mother despite being told of Chng's mother's condition.

A pilot was found guilty of punching a neighbour and fined $1,000 on Monday.

The Straits Times reported that 48-year old Ajmer Singh Ajit Singh, the chairman of the SilkAir branch of the Air Line Pilots Association Singapore, was said to have punched his neighbour, Mr Chua Hock Kwee, 58, at the coffee shop in Changi Garden Condominium at Upper Changi Road North at 7pm on May 8, 2010.

Mr Chua, who is a taxi driver, told the court that his neighbour had walked aggressively towards his table and subsequently accused him of being a gangster.

Singh, who was a member of the condominium's management committee at the time, punched Chua, whose dentures fell out.

The pilot countered with his own version of the events, saying it was Chua who had attacked him. Chua then hit his cheek on the shoulder of his friend who was also seated at the table when he lost his balance, said Singh.

Apart from this, it was revealed in court that the two neighbours also had another disagreement over joss sticks that Mr Chua used to burn outside his door.

After a seven-day trial, the judge ruled that lawyers Kertar Singh and Anil Singh Sandhu had proven their case against the SilkAir pilot, but did not grant the lawyers' request to be awarded costs for the prosecution and compensation for the injury suffered by Mr Chua.

Singh is appealing against the conviction and the sentence.
