Will you joint the 20% of the car owners who took part in the survey, to give up owning a car or forgo driving and switch to public transport? Or you are indeed one of the 20% who has intention to give up driving or owning a car, to switch to public transport.

English Translation (Only on those more relevant to the topic)

According to a poll by Lianhe Zaobao showed that close to 20% of car owners took part in the survey would forgo driving if COE prices continue to rise further.

However, around 40% of car owners say that they will still buy a new car even if COE prices continue to hit new highs.

The remaining 40% are undecided and more than half from this group of people are likely to sell or scrap their car upon reaching 10 years old, only 30% of them will renew the COE for their existing car to continue driving.

Those who prefer buying new cars are of the view that pre-owned vehicles are costly to maintain as compared to the new cars, which are relatively cheaper to maintain.

A real estate agent interviewed said that he has lost confidence on pre-owned cars. He revealed that he has owned 3 pre-owned cars previously and each of his pre-owned cars had been causing him lots of maintenance problems and he had to spent almost $500 monthly on the car maintenance. He said he would never buy a pre-owned car again, as these 2nd hand cars had given him lots of problems. He now owns a 4 years car, which was a new car at the time of purchase, and he spent only a few hundred dollars yearly to maintain this car.

Transport researchers were surprised to find that 20% of respondents said they would forgo owning a car and take public transport should COE prices continue to rise. They noted that with even a 5% fall in the traffic volume, Singapore would see significant improvements in its road traffic conditions, especially at peak hours.

I stop driving this month and switch to MRT because new job is now in CBD.

It's a no-brainer if I compare the monthly difference:

via MRT - S$3.50 x 22 = S$77

Driving - S$300 (season parking) + S$150 petrol + S$100 ERP = S$550

In terms of time difference, driving will be 30 min while MRT is 45 min (include walk to MRT stn)

Now I only drive over weekend.. [laugh]

As long as there is positive car growth.

As long as Coe is fully subscribed each month, there is no chance to have smooth traffic.

The 20% of losers, will be taken up by new car buyers from FT, PR and new citizens,

I still drive to work... no point having a car and keeping it at home to depreciate. Sell it or use it, alternatively, buy a OPC.

I am in the 40% camp that will continue to drive as I am pretty "emo" about driving, last 10 years have been great, cheap COE and cars, so I am preparing myself to fight with the 20% top earners to continue to drive in Singapore. Just have to work harder and nego for higher pay package at every opportunity. LOL.

But the morning MRT very very very packed and crowded. You can get used to "fighting" with others to get onto the train? [:/]

I live in the East so it's not too bad.. Still got sufficient space to stand comfortably

The other plus point is that it makes me sleep and wake up early nowadays since I am a habitual owl [:p]

My car is already into 7th year so I don't feel so heart pain. Anyway, I asked my wife to drive the car but she "bo ji" so I "bo bian"... <_<

As for me, i had not taken public transport ever since i got back my license 4 yrs ago.

I hate public transport ever since young (squeeze here and there)...i told myself to work hard for a car and bike...well, i think i did it.....but still improving to get better car and bike.

Look around, get stomp here and there, get shouted by mad people, train packed like sardines thus gota wait for 3 - 4 trains......cannot seat but stand and hold oily stainless steel poles, get to smell man's sweat and breath, people fart in confined space, unreliable and unpractical network......for f--k sake....why would i take public transport...the feeling of convenience and personal space = priceless. Plus, i can change destination and location whenever, wherever i want. Stuck in a jam? No prob....just turn on the radio + my Ipod or USB, and enjoy.....i hardly gets frustrated when i ride or drive.........except for one incident while i was riding...cut into my lane or force me out? no prob......i let you...coz i will see you in the next traffic light.

To ensure i stay the f--k out of public transport, i take care of my car and my bike with much effort and time......so much worth it....

Same sentiment as well if my work is in cbd area when the real reality is even if u have money... it may not buy u a season parking lot especially with the planned closure of golden shoe mscp. So sometime situation just doesn't permit some drivers to drive.

those 20% are more likely to be the marginal buyers during the cheap COE era..their income are less likely to keep pace with inflation and price hikes

Ditto. I ride to work on weekdays and leave the driving to the weekends.

so long i can afford and my job requires, i will not stop driving. recently heard from a friend who give up his car for public transport, keep complaining and update about the known facts about our "world class transport". Its not the days when we r still schooling, i only enjoy taking buses.

Just get a used car will do.

I dont know..I have seen couples with wailing babies board trains..the kid crying non stop on a very crowded train. The baby suffers..the parents were frustrated and the passengers around them pissed..

For me a hybrid option will work best..such as a mixture of public transport and a opc for that late night blockbuster movie

I will still buy a car. But then nowadays cycle to work everyday. Save alot more time than driving or public transport. Only on weekends will drive or when I am going somewhere else after work.

(edited)

I used to have two cars and sold one. Now my wife drive and send the kid to child care while I take bus.

I take bus 857 which goes up the cte. Takes the same route as I would if I drove. Only 5 bus stops for the 20 min journey. They should implement more express bus that goes up the expressway. I think the problem they have to solve is finding enough drivers during peak hours.

I used to be BWM four and a half years ago...thought our "world class transport" was wonderful as promised by our ministar ! [laugh]

After calculating my times and fares (have to transfer bus 3 times to and fro home/office/home) and bus load of "FT / FW Aliens"... enough is enough[blush]

Decided to drive again ...and not regretting to this present days.

Only takes public transport if I am on night out drinking with friends! [flowerface]
