Alpha78 6th Gear September 26, 2012 Share September 26, 2012 Go one big round, and conclusion is still the same.. We need more foreigners.. Remember the army song "Here we go again. Same ol' sh*t again".. this is the perfect time to sing it outside the army.. Yeah, here we go again. When it comes to foreigners we should properly classify them: 1. Management staff of MNCs, without whom the MNC will not set up shop in Singapore. Nobody is griping about their presence. 2. Foreign workers doing manual jobs which locals don't wish to do. Most people aren't against low skilled foreign workers who are mostly transient, but more can be done in the respective industries to utilise manpower more efficiently. Construction industry is one, where I see workers clustering and wasting time, e.g. one worker directing traffic, one setting up cones, one guiding the construction truck, and only one other guy unloading stuff. If these can be streamlined and more automation employed, the number of workers needed would reduce, and similarly reduce the infrastructure strain on this tiny island. 3. White collar workers. This is where the bulk of wage suppression of the middle class is taking place. Because of the abundance of supply of foreigners, overall wages cannot rise in tandem with the cost of living. This is the group whose numbers must be carefully calibrated, and only where locals cannot be found, can a foreigner be employed. By simply saying we need foreigners (without saying which ones), is to treat the voting population as daft.
Gee 1st Gear September 26, 2012 Author Share September 26, 2012 agree. as a comparison, in US, prior to applying a work permit for a foreigner, a company had to provide proof that they have advertised the job vacancy for at least 2 weeks and further proof that no suitable local applicant can fit the requirements. Penalty will be imposed if the govt agency can proof otherwise. not sure if this rule have changed for a more strict one now.
