If you had watched the Stallone show "Driven", you will understand why he came back. In the past there were F1 driver comebacks and won championship like Niki Lauder and Nigel Mansel but in the past computer tech did not advance that fast a pace. He was beating Rosberg in the 2nd half of this year. i feel he still got it in him and F1 news mentioned it was his own delay that led Merc to go for Lewis. The greatest of him IMO came in the battles with Mika Hakkinen. Ever since his comeback to the sport in the last 3 years, I felt that he still got wats in him just that he is not longer great as compared to his peak but nonetheless he did a great job as he's already in his 40s. But we will never know how competitive he will be if given a car with similar pace as the top teams. He will always be remembered as one of the all time greats in F1 history.
