1.4kg of heroin intercepted by ICA, CNB

AsiaOne Friday, Jan 04, 2013

SINGAPORE - Home Team agencies seized about 1.4kg of heroin from a Malaysian drug courier at Tuas Checkpoint on Jan 3.

Two local drug traffickers suspected to be responsible for the consignment were subsequently arrested by Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers.

On Jan 3, around 7.20am, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers stopped a 28-year-old male motorcyclist for checks when they spotted a black bundle hidden below the headlight of the bike. Suspicious that the bundle contained controlled drugs, ICA notified CNB officers.

After searching the Malaysian-registered motorcycle, CNB officers found four more black bundles below the right and left fairings of the motorcycle. About 1.4kg of heroin was found and the Malaysian was arrested.

In a follow-up operation the next day, around 2.30pm, CNB officers arrested two male Singaporeans, aged 47 and 64, near Woodlands Street 32.

Another 85 straws of heroin weighing about 115g, a small packet of 'Ice', drug paraphernalia, more than $5,000 cash, and two flick knives were recovered from the car.

One more packet of heroin weighing about 8g was found in another car in the same area on Jan 4.

Police K9 unit was also deployed to search the vehicles.

The total seizure of 1.5kg of heroin and 0.4g of 'Ice' has a street value of about $160,000.

The 47-year-old and 64-year-old Singaporeans are being investigated for drug trafficking while the 28-year-old Malaysian is being investigated for drug importation. If convicted, they may face the death penalty under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
