Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have been thinking of getting a big SUV / MPV due to changing family needs and not many seem to fall into my expectations in term of price / features.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee seems to have the right balance - aside from it's poor FC and high road tax, which I'm okay with. There are many factors why I like this car, it's huge (almost like a Hummer H3), has loads of features, it's tough and has high ground clearance - ease of getting in and out. I am sure if I go for a test drive there will be more reasons to like the car. The most important factor is that going for this car I don't feel like it's a downgrade from my current ride (Audi A5) in term of equipment level.

The car is a very important place for my family as we spend a lot of quality time together joy riding and going places, so I value comfort and fact that my wife and sons liked something tall and huge like a Hummer, but with a good creature comfort for all the passengers. My current ride is great for the driver, but not as great for passengers especially for long distance drives.

What I'm looking for is whether there is any reason not to go for a Jeep, particularly this model, so that if I sign on the dotted line, I know exactly what I'm getting myself into.

As u already know abt high fc n rtax also maintenance n depreciation also high.

Not many around so quite unique. Big n comfortable. My fren used to drive one n we went msia often in it. Nice but careful of roadholding n handling cos it has high center of gravity.

Be prepared to lose quite a bit when u try to sell it cos not much demand. So if u get a 2nd hand unit. ..bargain down e price.

Thanks bro! Yeah it's quite unique. I would consider a Hummer if only it were available new, then I realised Jeep is very well equipped and competitive compared to a Hummer, and there are some carparks that Hummer can't enter due to height. The road tax and FC is bad, then again I'm used to bad FC in my current ride.

I do like to air suspension and adjustable height, can go up and down 3 inches. Can't wait to test drive this machine.

The current version - if you opt for the Overland option does come with tonnes of features, air suspension being one. I was told you can even raise the ride height by 3 inches with the press of a button.

There are two levels that you can raise the vehicle to, but it will only maintain that height up to a certain speed.

The air suspension also lowers the car after you drive at 60 mph for some seconds, for fuel efficiency. You can also select that (and turn off traction control) when you select Sports mode.

Enjoy the car - it's a premium build and was the last make co-developed by Daimler Chrysler. Has the same bones as the MB ML320.

I have already seen the Range Rover, let me look at Jeep and see if the huge price difference between Range Rover and Jeep is justifiable. I suspect it's not, but I'll keep an open mind.

That one is a real off roader. Would be nice to have one for fun, but as a family car is a different matter.

Thanks for the info, one of the key point I liked is that it's based on MB ML320, so can't be too bad right? Good suspension and space are two of the more important considerations for me.

Depends if you intend to buy new or not and how long you intend to use the car.

If you buy new, prepare for the usual AD antics and high depreciation.

If you buy used, prepare for crazy maintenance costs - parts only available from AD in sg, and they jack up ~400% compared to parts price in the US.

It is also hard to find a workshop that has the necessary expertise to repair the car or change major wear and tear parts (when required). Took me lots of research and searching to find a US parts supplier + workshop in sg to do servicing/repair.

Great tip! I'm prepared to buy new. Initially I was thinking of getting resale car, but realised non of them were up to my expectations.

I understand the AD gives 5 years warranty for this brand, guess I'll have to check out more on how the maintenance works out. I expect my usage to be rather low and if I really like the car, might use it for at least 5 years, or until my backside itches again. Please share with me about the workshop contact if possible.

Just came back from the test drive very impressed.

There were just too many things I liked about the car. For once sitting in the Jeep I don't feel like I have sacrificed anything compared to my Audi. We liked the space and comfort, the very high position, the V6 engine was super slick smooth, the suspension was very comfy yet sure footed at moderately high speed cornering.

Only let down was that the boot wasn't very much bigger than my Audi, as I half expected for such a huge car the boot could be more generous. Overall it has all the nice features I am enjoying with my current ride and then some.

Now it's all a matter of working out the dollars and cents, see how good a deal I can get from the AD.

Just got back to SG and just joined this forum. Glad to see some Jeep following here. :D

Drove this GC and the SRT8 version back in the US.....very sweet machine....just surprised that it is so low profile here compared to the European offerings. In the current market, it really seems like a value proposition for what it has to offer. Really worth a test drive for a comparison.

Good to hear that you liked it.

The footprint of the boot space is indeed rather 'standard' sized, but it's as good as you're going to get in a mid-sized SUV. The only larger ones are those on full sized SUVs like Escalades, Tahoes, Suburbans, etc. The height is pretty good, though and you'll find that you can accommodate more than you think! I've also managed to accommodate a VERY lengthy item by folding down both the rear and passenger seats. The rear window also opens independently if you don't mind items sticking out.

There's always the option to purchase a roof rack/box if you really need more storage.
