gardens by the bay is not just a tourist attraction.

1 billion = 1000 mil

By doing a grand project in such a prime area, the influence potentially radiates and escalates the land prices for those nearby envisioned high class residential area.

With the money making acumen of the then mnd minister, it will bring in several billions more than if it is just a bay facing land parcel. P&L or intrinsic value or skyline wise, the biz part of it is easily justifiable.

ehhhh, albeit I do think the trickle down economics to the general 80% masses just a bed time story told by the big bad wolf.

If I'm not mistaken, it was paid by Sands in exchange for license to set up a casino here....

I thought it was the chance to reserve a large amount of green space in the central cbd whilst they continue development of Marina South/Marina Bay. Once they finish the MCE and the Downtown Lines etc, then they can start developing the area around GBB for commercial and residential development. So eventually in many years time (eg 2030) this area would be like a Hyde Park or Central Park equivalent.

No lah bro, totally different scale lah

Manhattan island itself is much bigger than Singapore's CBD.

Central Park itself is probably the size of the entire raffles place/ marina bay area.

I hope this will mean I get to see more local fresh grads in my bank then the usual indians and pinoys

I did a lot of recruitment for my company, an MNC bank. It's not as if I haven't tried to recruit locals. I simply don't get enough resumes from locals to start with. The few local ones I interviewed all wanted to move on to business analyst, project manager, or front office positions despite that they had only 3~4 years of experience. While the package is actually not bad for technology positions, it seems that all locals would rather go for BA/PM or financial advisor type of jobs, or even property agents.

You are so wrong, do you know why you don't get many local resume for technology position? All these job are taken by these Indian through underhand method!!

How they do that? They just need to ask their relative in India to send in their resume and the rest of the resume are just for show, in the end who get the job? Worst still, those local's resume will end up in the dustbin. How I know that? I am working in one of the MNC bank facing these people everyday. The best part is whole team of IT personal are mostly related, brother-in-law, cousin and uncle all in the same team. If they don't say, will anyone know they are related? All different family name how to know?

By the way, I am only contractor working there and do you think I have chance to convert to perm staff? Everyone know the answer!!!

Well, in fact I got resumes from a job agency. The agent I faced off was also a Chinese Singaporean so I don't think what you described above was true in my case. At one time I had to ask him to send me resumes of more "diversity" but the answer was there were simply not enough local applicants.

Here's my grievance with foreigners in Singapore.

1. Language

When you emigrate to England, you speak English, because that is their language. If you emigrate to France, you speak French, because that is their language. In Canada, you speak either English or French, because those two are the official languages.

Similarly, when foreigners come to Singapore, I expect them to speak one of our 4 languages. Instead I hear numerous other languages spoken at will as if they are the national/official languages of Singapore. This is not acceptable.

2. Quality of Foreigners

At present, there is a whole host of foreigners who should not be given the right to work in Singapore. These include the myriad number of Filipinas who are given passes to work as 'entertainers', when in reality they are latently selling their bodies for a buck and a half. Quite apart from objectifying, degrading and taking advantage of women of little or no means, it is wholly undesirable and unethical for a country like Singapore. Vice must be minimised.

3. Adoption of local culture.

Much can be achieved by abiding to the age old saying 'When in Rome, do what the Romans do'. So, for example, when driving, stop at the zebra crossing and let passengers cross, and do not say that 'in my country it is OK to go pass the zebra crossing if the pedestrian is waiting to cross'. It does not not matter anymore what is done elsewhere. Foreigners must abide the laws, customs and practices of Singapore and not insist that what they do in their home countries takes precedence.

4. Knowledge of Singapore

Prior to coming, foreigners should read up about Singapore and its various ethnic mix, and not be surprised by it after entering Singapore.

For example, it is inappropriate to assume that this is a Chinese country and every Indian and Malay are foreigners.

Another example is the recognition that we are a people of our own. As an analogy: no American identifies himself as "Irish-American", "Italian-American", "Polish-American" etc. They identify themselves proudly as "Americans", full stop. Similarly, Singaporeans are Singaporeans, and not "Chinese-Singaporean", or "Malay-Singaporean" or "Indian-Singaporean". Our allegiance is to our country and not to our motherland. We have evolved to the point that we are a nation of our own. So, stop seeing us as mere immigrants of our motherland.

5. Arrogance

There is a prevalent arrogant mentality that Singaporeans are inferior to foreigners. This is troubling and must be gotten rid off. There is a sizeable proportion of Singaporeans who earn significantly high enough, or who are very educated, or possess various other attributes all enough to condescend foreigners if they wish to. Some of us pay taxes in one month what some foreigners earn in an entire year. We can just as easily look down on foreigners, but we do not do so because we are not an arrogant group of people. So quit the arrogant mentality.

6. Be grateful

Many foreigners seem ungrateful that Singapore has allowed them entry and afforded them a quality of life they will never see or receive in their own countries. Many foreigners all too easily forget that will not make it elsewhere in the world, especially in countries where a point-based system is adopted. They ought to be reminded of this and be grateful to Singapore.

The big difference is that migrant migrate to other western country to stay there for good. Here, mostly are strictly business. There is no sense of attachment and thus no assimilation.....

Men and women leave their homeland seeking permanent + greener pasture else where when they find a place which possesses at least some of the attractions below, on a LONG TERM basis:-

Vast opportunities for jobs or making a decent living

Established and stable political system, preferably non-communist or not ruled by dictators or similar

Rich culture and heritage

Local population which is Relatively peace loving, civil etc

Relatively resource rich eg in terms of mining, agriculture etc

Sound education / healthcare systems

At least a moderate crime rate

Non-extreme climates

(please add)

Singapore may score in some of the above, not many on a long term basis as we know it is always walking on a tight rope figuratively speaking.

Cannot blame FTs or FWs for taking SGP only as a transient place or just a stepping stone.

singapore will always need new attractions to bring in the tourists

so what arab countries can replicate or even do it on a bigger scale..... as a tourist, would you prefer asia or arab countries as a tourist destination

Our cultural diversity is a natural and genuine feature to attract tourists. Comparing it with artificial and costly faked trees and environments for plants which other countries can duplicate, it's not money well spent as far as local taxpayers are concerned. Tourists visit place to see the local culture plus natural and genuine local stuff, not faked trees. They look at faked stuff and laugh, not with any admiration.
