ST Forum: Hefty Price Hikes For Wedding Banquet

Reputable = Exquisite = $$$?

[laugh] [laugh]

Jokes aside, Samantha & her fiance should look for restaurants instead of hotels which typically charges higher for everything: food, ambience, service, venue, etc

And probably they are looking at weekends which explains the $1,450/table charge [sweatdrop], excluding taxes some more.

Unless they expect their guests to all bao BIG BIG ang pows to help pay for or subsidise the cost, they should really source for cheaper alternatives or even none at all.

Have known couples to squabble [furious] over everything leading up to the wedding which is regrettable [shakehead]

Last thing they need is a glaring deficit over the wedding dinner budget which could not be recovered by the red packets collected.

Hefty price hikes for wedding banquet

WHEN my fiance and I inquired with several reputable hotels about the cost of holding a wedding banquet, we were told that the cost of a table for 10 guests averaged about $1,450 (excluding taxes).

What was more shocking was that prices were set to increase by 5 per cent if we did not act fast.

Friends working in the hospitality industry confirmed that prices for banquet tables increase by an average of 5 per cent every year. However, the quality of the food does not differ.

Even the rate of inflation does not justify such a yearly increase.

What industry regulations are in place to ensure that hotels and restaurants do not overcharge?

Many people die die want hotel. Other places cannot. Why huh? Because they die die must have a room upstairs after makan?

Sometimes it's not just the couples decision to make. For me I wanted to rom and that's it but my parents and my in-laws wanted one. Dan there's the number of guests a restaurant can only hold. Finding a suitable venue is not easy, availability is also a problem. You have to go thru it to understand what ppl are going thru. [rolleyes]

this mentality got to change or it will become a tradition and culture.

if i knew the couple had went beyond their means, i would forbid myself to go for some reasons.

still give ang bao some time after, not being disrespectful or anything, just me. ^_^

Try as she might, she will not be able to talk the prices down. She forgets that the F&B is service-related industry and in recent times, they have been hit hard by labour caps and Foreign Worker ratios. Wool grows on sheep, to coin a Chinese saying. Costs are going up for F&B operators, and because they like to keep their profits, they pass it on to hapless die-die-want-face couples like Samantha and her fiance.

Tough, but as someone said, go for restaurant without attached hotel, do lunch reception, do on non-weekends. Will be cheaper by a good chunk.

All gahment's fault. Tharman forgot to include wedding package rebate.

[laugh][laugh] Haha. Soon there will be request for wedding package rebates, priority for 1st time marriages, etc...

Even hotel and restaurant also got people ask to be regulated. Very soon, government got to start regulating everything.

Then when government start to intervene in everything, Sillyporeans complain to government to leave it to market forces.

Back to the topic, Samatha should get something affordable and within her means. If Hotel A charge $1450, and Hotel B charge $1350, then go for the cheaper one.

Then there should be even more rebates for repeat marriages since these people still believe in marriage and family. [laugh]

that should be one incentive to encourage couple to get married early.

Govt subsidies 20% of the banquet cost, if couple manage to conceive within 1 year after the banquet, another 10% :D :D

Supercharged

Usually the couple want hotel because of the rooms (easy to change clothes and retire to bed). Another reason is that it looks more grant (better face) than a restaurant.

If want cheaper price with good food and service, do it at a restaurant. If want convenient and lavish settings, but at a higher price, do it in a hotel. There is no best of both worlds.
