Can we overtake in single carriageway with 1 lane in each direction? (i do that quite often in malaysia B or trunk roads. but how about singapore?)

continuous white line in the centre.

I know that double white line confirm cannot cross or overtake.

21 Crossing double white lines

22 Crossing road divider

Why rule 22?

hmm i was told centre continuous white line = no parking at the sides but can cross the line to overtake.

and that double white line = no parking and no crossing the line.

Then what would be the difference between a continuous white line & a dashed one?

This rule is fairly universal, not just in Singapore.

single continuous white line can overtake and cross, dashed one will be marking for lanes.

Road Traffic Act Chapter 276 Section 112 Part IV no.54

White Lines

52. Where continuous double white lines are painted on a road to separate traffic flowing in opposite directions, you may not overtake at the double white lines unless you keep entirely to the left of such lines.

53. Never cross double white lines. Making a U-turn or a right turn is not allowed on a road where such lines are painted.

54. Never cross a single continuous or broken white line along the middle of the road unless you can see that the road ahead is clear.

Meaning you can cross

the reason why i asked was that i was driving home on a single narrow lane just now, a car behind me on his right signal.

he did not horn me or flash me, but i assumed he was in a rush as sometimes he will come out of our lane to "see" further and whether safe to overtake.

Once i saw this and once it was safe, i slowed down, signalled left and moved off to the side. He took my cue and overtook promptly. No drama no nothing.

however after me, all the vehicles in front of me simply heck care him.

i got this habit of squeezing to the left to give way after driving/riding in Malaysia because i know others will do the same for me.

Not really true. Dashed white lines exist on roads where parking at the sides are allowed. Normally these dashed lines are bolder than lane markings. An example of such a road:

Depending on number of lane. If the example above will be dashed lines also.

dashed - same direction but different lane

continuous - different direction???

Both dashed line and single continuous white line can be found as a centre divider in a bidirectional road. and both can cross to overtake. But dashed line means can park on the sides of the road, single continuous white line = cannot park
