Hi all, I'm driving a 07 avante. Just yesterday my engine light came on and I sent down to Komoco to see what's wrong. It was diagnosed to be a catalytic converter issue. My mileage is only at 97k km and always been using unleaded petrol. Anyone else has this issue?

what exactly is the issue? what is the code? Catalytic converter very difficult to spoil, need to be super lucky then will happen.

maybe sensor dirty or Catalytic converter needs washing.

Normally it is a due to a clogged cat or dirty oxygen sensor which is mounted on the cat. This sensor is very sensitive to any air differences passing through the cat.

My car is already running 120k and the Engine light came up. Upon scanning with an OBD scanner, the error code came out to be P0420 which is a cat error code.

So went to workshop, took out cat, see through it, there are no blockage, it was perfectly healthy so i cleared the engine light using the OBD scanner.

How do you know if it is a clogged cat is when you start car, ask a friend to rev the throttle and you stand near the exhaust to listen....if you near metal clinking sound, there are bits are clogged in the cat...

In my opinon, if the cat is not clogged there is nothing much to worry about, just buy a OBD scanner like Ultra guage to clear the check engine light.

Honestly, I don't really trust Komoco.

The first time when the CEL came on for my avante, the mechs at Komoco told me not to pump RON92 and 95. Must use 98. What rubbish. I went to 2 more workshops and asked for their opinions. Both told me my error code P2096 was very common for avantes and is not necessarily due to catalytic converter issue. They just told me to get a bottle of fuel injection cleaner and the CEL will go off after a few days. I did and the CEL has not come back since.

Last time I was driving an 08 avante, if I pump Caltex 92/95, check light would appear.. 98, den nothing happens.. So I look for alternative.. Went esso, pump 5000 which is equalievent to Caltex 95, no more check light pro :)

Some mechanics says it's caused by jb petrol, I don't rules out the possibility as I does pump jb petrol on e in a while.. Manage to solve by switching brand of petrol used :)

Anyway, if u go to Hyundai forum, there's a Christmas list of common pro wit avante.. But so far so gd, no breaks down nor major repair happens during the period of my ownership till the day aft I sign on the papers to sold it off.. Funny things did happen along the way thou, but still it delivered me to the dealer safely :)

Pump JB since day one. 6.5yr 100k mileage. Not issue at all.

Other than wear and tear. This car never give me any problem.

Very reliable car. Better than my previous car Corolla. Maybe luck?

Just changed the fan belt and water pump for the first time yesterday.

Despite my mileage being 130k, the fan belt was still in good condition. Also, it helps when you use good coolant (not water or distilled water) as there were no signs of rust and corrosion on the impellers of the water pump.

Forgot to mention, I replace the fuel strainer at 60k.

And never skip any normal or major servicing.

Don't know is it related or not.

My fan belt still in good condition too. Think this is the only belt we need to replace right? Unlike other model got Aircorn, power streeing, timing belt.

I also having this issue now.

My CEL is on and i bring to KOMOCO to check. The mechanic told me is due to catalytic converter spoiled and need to be replace. The cost is about 3K - 4K..

I bring the car to check in workshop nearby my area, the mechanic said may be i pump petrol in JB that causing this. He just clear to code for me. But after 2 days the CEL on again. [:(]

Don't listen to the b-------t about pumping JB petrol. My ex-Avante was on JB petrol since the second tank of petrol and I have not encountered such problems until I sold it at about 90+K km. On the Avante, I started off with Petronas RON97 and thereafter Esso RON97.

think my problem resolve without change the catalytic converter. hopefully the CEL light will not come back cause it already off for few days.

a friend of mine share his experience with me where he face have this problem before and how the problem resolve..

try to finish your existing feul to the max until the petrol light is up..

pump in full RON98. after 2-3 round of full tank RON98, it may solve the problem and CEL light will off.

My CEL light just off without reset after the 3rd round of RON98.. and now i start to pump back RON95.

i dont know why, may be is the sensor dirty issue or RON98 do the cleaning?? haha..
