Hi all,

This morning while driving to work, noticed that the radiator temp lighted up. As I'm about 5 mins more to reach my office, I continue to drive it. Upon reaching my office carpark, I discovered the radiator/coolant cap has been disapeared/drop off. So, is it safe to drive the car to the workshop? or need to call for a towing service?

Thank you

Buy one cap and put on.

If the ws is nearby, it can be driven there. But first fill up the radiator first!

1. What was the temperature? if it was close to maximum, it is not recommended to drive as engine can jam when the temperature exceeds the maximum.

2. Driving without Cap when the temperature is very high is another risk because, the coolant can splash all over and ultimately you lose on coolant volume also. Better to call your workshop and get correct advise.

No need to tow, just buy a cap and top up coolant.

I think some convenience shops @ petrol kiosk sells them. Can check the ones near your office. Or get another friend to drive to some WS to buy the cap.

Drive even short distance without cap is risky. Engine overheat then damaged is no joke.

The problem is my office is in City Hall area & my wk is at east side. Further more, there is no shop nearby selling the coolant. Now I'm worrking will it causes a bad demage to the car.

Go to Waterloo Centre. It is quite near City Hall. There are many car accessory shops.

You mean the engine red light come on is it?.

Without radiator cap you cant go far as the temperature will rise very fast once the coolant evaporate.

THis will lead to engine failure and huge amount of money to overhaul the engine.

Did u go workshop recently? Ty prob screw up never put back or sabotage yr car.

Now just buy a new cap...make sure its of correct pressure...then fill water n coolant n cap it n drive as normal. No issue.

If cannot get coolant just fill full wh water n go ws ask them to drain radiator n fill correct amt of coolant n top up wh water when u free can already. If u can get distilled water (not mineral water hor ) better.

Long ago on way to work steam come out cos hose got leak. I remove cap n drive n keep topping up water every 15-20 mins till reach work. Then go buy new hose n replace n top up water n coolant n drive as normal.

My experience, FIL top up radiator water before heading off to Genting from Malacca, when he reach the top, of Genting, the car gives a warning and dies off, found out forgot to recap.

Luckily already reach the top and there's water point near by, so just top up with water first.

For your case, no worrries and continue to top up with water first, then drive to any workshop that sells the cap.

Your cap very old already ? Happen to me once was the radiator cap was so old, when I bought a new cap to replace it (aftermarket cap)...when I twist it open...the bottom part of the cap was gone. Dunno went to where...so just replace the new cap and drive.

Maybe your case like mine...drop off and hence no proper lock and it got blasted out due the pressure ?

You need to have the cap on for the cooling system to work...you can't drive without one cos the system will not be able to build pressure.

Worst case...see if can borrow one from your colleague and put it on and drive to some place where they sell it.

alot of petrol stations sell the cap. Waterloo street also sell. Even if you buy the wrong pressure cap, it is better than nothing. BUT quickly go to workshop to recheck it again. By right, you are supposed to get the correct pressure cap.

Later lunch time just take a cab to Autobacs Ubi(ask the cabby to wait a while), buy a radiator cap and water wetter (mix this with water and pour into radiator). If you dunno just ask the staff there. I think your old one the seal probably disintegrated and the pressure, vibration caused it to come loose and dropped out of sight.

Better check your engine oil level too coz most likely a lot are burnt off due to overheating.

Things to get:

1) Radiator cap

2) water wetter or radiator coolant(I think they got sell long life coolant, those Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota...)

3) 4L engine oil for top up. Best is that you check the engine oil level now to decide how much litre to buy.
