Supposedly you are intending to buy an old car/van, mainly for transportation use.

Car/Van has been around since 97, what are the mandatory things to change if under your name?

tyre,

timing belt,

engine oil

brake

cooler

brake oil

is it advisable to do a full engine overhaul? if i not wrong, overhaul usually quite expensive..

please share your thoughts

definetly timing belt as priority. The rest can replace when there is a need.

Why overhual when it still runs? delay until no other choice...

sound good to me, save money and afterall, its only a van.

no doubt overhaul sure can make the engine restored but it don't come cheap.

i kinda particular about the engine performance, what should i do to remove those dirt that was built up along the last 16 years?

i think what you should do is to see for tell tale signs of trouble like black exhaust smoke, sluggish, very high clutch biting point means clutch is worn off already.

Also check on the suspension to make sure it is not bouncy like those old crown taxis and tyre still can see the threads....

Very curios why would you want to buy a vehicle if need to change so many things.Don't tell me you did not test the vehicle and inspect it before you buy.Nowadays spare parts and labour are not cheap.

Exactly what I tot too. Some more the van is almost 16 years old... don't forget the older the vehicle, the harder to get spare parts! :o

You might also wanna check who are the van's previous owners. If its for company use, usually it may be driven "rough" as the drivers are not the owners of the van (if you get what I mean).

yet to test drive but my 'informer' said its normal for an old van.

i did do my homework, first it is a malaysia vehicle.

Parts are available, be it from Japan or generic.

Parts are consider cheap for generic.

Basically, this van is for malaysia used.

Parts are good to change considering its age and unfamiliarity and the reliability of the servicing records.

As for overhaul, a workshop would be the best to check for you and advise accordingly.

In my opinion, if there is nothing wrong with the engine (i.e. engine block and pistons or leakage), then no need.

2 ways to look at it

1) 1 time pain... change everything... as long as it is essential even if it is not spoiled since you say it was not maintain well... peace of mind

2) pain abit by abit , change when breakdown.. but this will also mean loss of time.... if you are still doing the food business... time is money especially if you are making delivery....

i will choose option 1.... find a reliable workshop and ask him change whatever that needs to be changed

water pump is located inside the engine, water pump liquid cool your engine, is a wear and tear part, will leak when its age. if its leaking, your car temp will go up.
