The Government's proposals to inject more fairness into the vehicle quota system have whipped up a vigorous debate and initial signs point to more people supporting, rather than opposing, the suggested moves.

Motor traders, transport experts and online readers of The Straits Times are largely in favour of the proposal to impose a surcharge on motorists who buy more than one car.

Announced by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew on Thursday, the idea was cheered by many yesterday.

Said the president of the Motor Traders Association, Mr Cheah Kim Teck: "In a society like ours, there's just no need for anyone to own more than one car."

just ban the mother father gentlemen dealer from bidding coe

dealers are blood sucker .... they just want to suck you dry

obviously there is a conflict of interest

dealer want to sell sell sell ... in order to sell they must secure the coe ... hence dealer outbid dealer in order to secure coe to sell car and hit quota

This I support !.they come 101 ways to appease the public . But they just don't want to acknowledge this.

Honestly, if this act is being implement. It will reduce the inflation and cost of living significantly.

Why does the authorities allow the competition of business among the dealers to become the local car owner's problem?

To add one more, authorized distributors should not be allow to sell used cars. Why?

Because they can control and manipulate COE which indirectly determine or will affect their used cars that are for sale.. Which again is not fair.

Simply put, conflict of interest.

I fully support since my family only has a car. So i support govt to impose higher tax for 2nd car owner, think road tax must pay 2x if u have 2 car, 3x for 3 car and capped at 5x hahha

Rubbish proposal, even if the owner has 7 cars he can only drive 1 out at the same time.

Owning 7 cars doesnt means the 7 cars are out on the road at the same time and contributing jam.

I support 50% downpayment and self bid COE.

This will weed out those margin line car owners.

this is the 2nd wave from the 140%-180% to tax the rich ...

easily circumvent ... 1 under own name, 1 under wife, 1 under parent, 1 under children, etc

but the loan cannot all be under all 1 name ... [laugh]

Precisely, when one can drive only one car at a time, when he buys more than one, his other cars occupy additional COE and left unused when other people need it most since COE is scarce. Nonetheless, money can buy many things. if he is willing and able to pay, by all means to buy more. [:p] I think this is the underlying meaning of the new implementation.

Supercharged

suddenly an idea struck me - in addition to limiting monthly instalment to 30% monthly salary, add another cap like car price include coe not exceeding 12 months basic salary. this could boost used car sales and curb coe speculations to certain extend, unless no. of ppl here r richer than I think..

I think the government needs to make up their bloody mind. Want to reduce traffic or want everyone to have a car. U can't have COE and then try to implement measures to allow more people to own cars. If you want more people to own cars, then get rid of COE. Try to do both end up get a half-f--k situation where owning and driving cars will still be expensive but traffic conditions get worse.
